A pocket-sized climb that trades sweat for the same jaw-drop panorama serious hikers spend half a day chasing on Mount Scenery.
The Experience
Tucked into the same trailhead as the island's famous Mount Scenery slog, Maskehorne Hill (locals also call it Mas'Cahone's or Mas'Cohones) is the short, sharp detour most first-timers walk right past. You'll leave the Trail Shop in Windwardside, wind through a soft tangle of ferns and elephant ears, and hit the fork within minutes. Bear left and the path tilts upward through mossy stone steps, a stretch of hand-over-hand rope near the top, and then breaks open onto a shelf of volcanic rock. From there, Saba unfolds in miniature: the gingerbread rooftops of Windwardside pressed against the green flank of the mountain, the Caribbean spilling out to the horizon, and on clear days the silhouettes of St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, and St. Barths floating on the blue. It's the kind of view that feels earned without actually costing you a morning.
What to Try
Time it for the golden hour before sunset - the light rakes across the red roofs of Windwardside and turns the sea into hammered copper. If you have the legs, keep going: at the fork you can loop onto Bud's Trail and connect to Mount Scenery for a proper half-day rainforest adventure. Bring a lightweight camera; there's a natural rock ledge near the summit that acts as a built-in tripod.
Insider Tip
Do it the morning AFTER a rain, not during. The moss on the concrete steps turns into a slip-and-slide when wet, and the rope near the top is more decorative than reliable. Also: sign in at the Saba Trail Shop before you go - it's free, it helps the rangers if anything goes sideways, and they'll flag whether the summit is socked in with cloud so you don't hike up to a wall of white.
The Practical Stuff
Trailhead: Saba Trail Shop, Windwardside (free parking). Distance: about 0.6 miles / 1 km out-and-back. Elevation gain: ~360 ft / 110 m. Time: 30-60 minutes round trip. Difficulty: easy-to-moderate - short but genuinely steep, with slick stone steps and a rope-assisted scramble near the top. Best months: November through May (drier, clearer skies). Bring: sturdy trainers or light hikers, water, and a windbreaker for the exposed summit.
