The Experience
Driving down the switchbacks toward Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, the road suddenly opens onto the only genuinely flat ground on Saba ΓÇö a black, wind-scoured peninsula formed when a lava flow poured off the northeast flank of Mount Scenery and hardened at the water's edge. You feel the shift instantly: no more cloud forest, no more pastel gingerbread houses, just raw volcanic rock, salt spray, and the roar of the Atlantic slamming against the cliffs. A short, easy trail (about 15 minutes each way) drops from the roadside down to the coast, past the crumbling stone walls of a 17thΓÇæ and 18thΓÇæcentury sugar and indigo plantation ΓÇö including the ruins of the old boiling house ΓÇö and out to the tide pools. The pools themselves are small, crystalΓÇæclear basins scooped into the lava, refilled with every incoming swell and quietly busy with brain coral, sea urchins, anemones, fuzzy chitons, juvenile parrotfish, and darting sergeant majors. Sit long enough and you'll hear the twin soundtrack of Flat Point: waves booming against jagged basalt, and the occasional buzz of a de Havilland Twin Otter dropping onto the 400ΓÇæmetre runway just behind you.
What to Try
Walk the short tideΓÇæpool trail from the roadside sign (before Cove Bay) down to the coast, then spend an hour lying on the warm rock watching the microΓÇæreef life in the pools. Poke around the ivyΓÇæwrapped ruins of the sugar and indigo works on the way back up. Time your visit so you're standing on the peninsula when a plane lands or takes off ΓÇö from Flat Point you get the full drama of the world's shortest commercial runway, with the aircraft dropping between cliffs and stopping short of the sea. Bring a mask if the swell is flat; the outermost pools occasionally hold enough water for a snorkelΓÇæstyle peek at the coral.

Never, ever get in the water ΓÇö or even sit on the seaward rocks ΓÇö when swell is running. Flat Point has serious rip currents and rogue waves that have swept people off the ledge; locals will tell you the pools are for looking, not swimming. Stop at the Trail Shop in Windwardside first to check current conditions, wear proper shoes (the lava is razorΓÇæsharp, not sandalΓÇæfriendly), and go in the morning before the trade winds and afternoon chop pick up. Bonus: the light on the black rock and turquoise pools is best just after sunrise.
The Practical Stuff
Location: northeast coast of Saba, in Lower Hell's Gate, on the road down to Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport (SAB). Access: free, open daily, no ticket or guide required. Getting there: 5ΓÇô10 minutes by taxi or rental car from Windwardside; the trailhead is a small sign on the seaward side of the airport road, just before Cove Bay. Trail: ~15 minutes down, a little longer back up; easy grade but uneven volcanic rock ΓÇö wear closedΓÇætoe shoes. Bring water, sun protection, and a hat; there is zero shade. No facilities onΓÇæsite, so use the airport terminal for restrooms. Safety: check tide and swell with the Saba Trail Shop before going; do not enter the water when waves are breaking over the rocks.
