Why Go

Long Bay sits at Antigua's eastern end, and it is the exception on this coast: everywhere else the Atlantic arrives with force, but here a reef runs close inshore and turns the bay into a shallow, protected pool. The water is waist-deep a long way out, the coral is close enough to reach with a mask from the sand, and the swimming is calm on days when the rest of the east coast is unusable. That combination makes it the best family beach on this side of the island and one of the easiest snorkels in the country.

The Experience

The bay is a modest crescent with a fringing reef visible as a line of white water offshore, and the water inside it is clear and pale over sand. There are a couple of hotels at either end and very little in between, so the beach reads as quiet even when there are people on it. Behind, the land is dry and low, and the road out here crosses the agricultural east of the island, which is a different Antigua from the resort coasts — cane country turned to scrub and small farms. Devil's Bridge, a natural arch cut by the Atlantic into the limestone at the point beyond, is a few minutes further and is the other reason people make the drive. The two together fill a morning. The reef here is doing something you can watch happen. Stand at the water's edge and the line of white offshore is the Atlantic being stopped, while the pool between it and the sand stays flat — the same mechanism that makes Bonaire and parts of Barbados swimmable on their windward sides, visible in one glance.

What to Try

Bring a mask. The reef at Long Bay is close, shallow and reachable straight off the sand, which makes it the least demanding snorkel on Antigua and a good place for anyone nervous about deep water. Swim, then drive on to Devil's Bridge at the point — a natural arch where the Atlantic has cut through the limestone, with blowholes firing on a day with swell and nothing at all built around it. The east coast beyond is empty and worth the drive for its own sake. There is little in the way of food out here, so eat before you come or bring it with you; the villages inland have small shops but nothing aimed at visitors. Half Moon Bay is a short distance south for a completely different beach on the same coast.

Pair it with Devil's Bridge and go in the morning. The two are minutes apart at the eastern end of the island, and the bridge is far more dramatic when there is swell running — which is also when Long Bay's reef is doing its most obvious work, holding the same sea off a beach you can stand up in. Take everything with you: this end of Antigua has almost no facilities, and turning back for lunch means a long drive across the island.

Long Bay is about forty minutes to an hour from St. John's and thirty-five to forty-five from V. C. Bird International, at the eastern end of the island. Driving is on the LEFT and a temporary local permit is required, and the roads across the interior are narrow. You need a car; buses do not serve this coast usefully. Parking is informal near the beach. Facilities are minimal — a couple of hotels and very little else — so bring water and food. The reef makes the swimming calm here even when the rest of the east coast is rough, but there is no lifeguard. Antigua is in the hurricane belt, roughly June to November, and this coast takes weather first.
