Dickenson Bay is the long curve of pale sand at Antigua's north-western corner, and it is the closest thing the island has to a resort strip. The water is shallow, warm and reliably calm, the hotels sit directly behind the beach, and the watersports operations run off it all day. It is ten minutes from St. John's and twenty from the airport, which makes it the default choice for a first visit and the busiest beach on Antigua by a comfortable margin.
The Experience
The bay faces north-west and is well sheltered, so the water is flat most of the year and the sunsets land straight down the beach. The sand is soft and the shelf is gentle, which is why families gravitate here. Behind it the hotels are low-rise and close together, with a strip of bars and restaurants between them, and the whole thing is compact enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes. It is busy in season and noticeably quieter in the autumn. Cruise passengers arrive by taxi from St. John's on ship days, which is when the middle of the beach fills; the northern end toward the headland stays calmer. Beyond that headland the coast turns wilder and emptier almost immediately. The bay also shows what proximity does to a beach. What to Try
Swim, and use the water — this is the easiest beach on the island to get onto a board, a jet ski or a small boat, and the operations work directly off the sand so nothing needs booking far ahead.
