Who must register
All motor vehicles driven in Saint-Martin (2, 3 or 4 wheels) must be registered under the system in force.
If you live on the Dutch side, you must apply for registration to the Dutch authorities. (The page spells it "Sint Marteen".)
What it costs
2 or 3 wheels: free for engines below 125cc; 18€ for 125cc under 10 years old; 9€ for 125cc over 10 years old; 36€ per cheval vapeur (horsepower) for engines above 125cc.
4 wheels: 36€ per cheval vapeur for vehicles under 10 years old; 18€ per cheval vapeur for vehicles over 10 years old.
How long the certificate lasts
The registration certificate (formerly the carte grise) is issued for the whole life of the vehicle.
You must inform the Collectivite's services of any change concerning the vehicle (theft, transfer, destruction or withdrawal from circulation).
Note: the document is available for three months at the Service des titres de circulation. After that it is archived and you must request a duplicate.
If you change vehicle
Saint-Martin's registration system assigns a plate number to a person, not to a vehicle.
If you change vehicle you keep the same registration, provided that: the previous vehicle was not stolen, and the transfer of the previous vehicle was validly registered with the Collectivite's services.
