Warung Herda

Old-school Javanese-Surinamese warung tucked away in Tamanredjo

Why Go

In a village where every other doorway hides a warung, Herda has quietly earned its spot with regulars who swear the bami here tastes exactly like their grandmother's kitchen circa 1978.

The Experience

There's nothing polished about Warung Herda, and that's the whole point. This is a proper neighbourhood warung in the heart of Tamanredjo ΓÇö the Javanese-Surinamese village in Commewijne where descendants of contract labourers from Java built one of the most delicious food scenes in the country. You order at the counter, point at what looks good in the display, and eat either at a plastic table or take it back to your guesthouse in a warm parcel. The clientele is almost entirely local: farmers stopping in for lunch, families picking up a Sunday spread, the occasional Paramaribo day-tripper who's driven the hour east specifically for this. Everything is cooked fresh in small batches, which means the menu shifts with the day and the best stuff sells out by early afternoon. Come with cash, come hungry, and don't expect anyone to speak English ΓÇö a smile and a pointed finger will get you exactly where you need to go.

What to Try

The bami is the benchmark dish ΓÇö springy noodles wok-tossed with sweet soy, a whisper of garlic, and whatever protein looks best that morning. Tilo (crispy fried cassava snacks) and lumpia (Javanese spring rolls) are the go-to grab-and-go bites, and the baka bana ΓÇö fried plantain in a light batter ΓÇö is the perfect sweet-savoury closer. If you see saoto soup on the counter, order it: clear chicken broth with bean sprouts, crispy shallots, boiled egg, and shredded chicken is Suriname's ultimate comfort dish and Herda's version is textbook.

Insider Tip

Show up before 1pm on weekends if you want the full spread ΓÇö the best dishes (especially the saoto and any curry-style rendang) tend to be cleaned out by mid-afternoon. And bring small SRD notes; card payments aren't a thing here and change for large bills is often a problem.
