Why Go
Tucked onto quiet Costerstraat in Rainville, Souposo has spent years turning a simple concept ΓÇö a rotating menu of soups made from scratch ΓÇö into one of Paramaribo's most affectionate little institutions. It's the kind of place locals send visitors when they want them to actually taste Suriname, not just eat in it.
The Experience
Souposo is small, green, and unpretentious: a modest dining room opening onto a garden-shaded terrace where lunch stretches into a slow afternoon. The kitchen posts a chalkboard of four soups per day ΓÇö usually two anchors (a silky peanut and a comforting pumpkin) plus a rotating cast of manioc, spinach, chicken, or fish ΓÇö each ladled out with fresh bread and a friendly explanation of what's in the bowl. It's equally comfortable for a solo traveller with a book, a group of hikers refuelling after a river trip, or vegetarians who've been struggling to find real options elsewhere in the city. Service is warm and unhurried in that distinctly Surinamese way, and the crowd is a mix of Paramaribo regulars, NGO staff, and in-the-know tourists.
What to Try
Start with the pindasoep (peanut soup) ΓÇö thick, nutty, and finished with a boiled egg and salted meat or tofu; it's the dish that put Souposo on the map. The pompoensoep (pumpkin) is the other daily constant and pairs beautifully with the house bread. If the manioc (cassava) soup or a fish soup is on the board, order it: these are the harder-to-find Surinamese classics done properly. Vegetarians should ask which of the day's four is meat-free ΓÇö there's almost always at least one, and often two.
Insider Tip
Come at the beginning of service (around midday) rather than late afternoon ΓÇö Souposo genuinely runs out of the day's specials, and the rotating soup is usually the first to go. Sit on the garden side rather than inside; it's a few degrees cooler and much prettier. Cash in SRD is easiest, and a small tip is appreciated but not expected.

Hours are typically MondayΓÇôSaturday, roughly 10:00ΓÇô23:00, closed Sunday ΓÇö but hours shift, so check their Facebook page before making a special trip. Prices are budget-friendly (a bowl with bread lands well under a main-course price elsewhere in town). Reservations aren't needed for lunch; larger groups should call ahead.
