Roopram Lelydorp
The roti roll that made Suriname famous, served drive-thru style on the JFK Highway.
Why Go
Since 1967, the Roopram name has meant one thing in Suriname: roti done right. The Lelydorp branch on Indira Gandhiweg is a fast-paced pit stop where locals swing in for a RotiRol between airport runs and Paramaribo commutes.
The Experience
Roopram Lelydorp is one of five outposts of a beloved Surinamese-Hindustani roti chain born from Grandma Roopram's Paramaribo kitchen. Don't expect white tablecloths ΓÇö this is a bright, buzzing counter-service spot with a drive-thru window, packed at lunchtime with tradesmen, families and taxi drivers grabbing paper-wrapped rotis to go. The rhythm is quick: order at the counter, watch the cooks slap fresh dhalpuri onto the tawa, and either eat at one of the plastic tables or take it back on the road. It's fast food, but the recipes are handed-down family ones ΓÇö soft, flaky roti draped over generously spiced curries of chicken, duck, lamb or potato and long bean. Portions are hearty and prices sit firmly in the everyday-lunch bracket, which is exactly why Surinamese diaspora order it the moment they land at JAP airport, ten minutes down the road.
What to Try
The RotiRol is the house signature ΓÇö a rolled-up handheld version of the classic plate, ideal for the drive-thru. For the full sit-down experience, order roti met kip (chicken curry) or the beloved roti met eend (duck curry, the Surinamese benchmark), scooped by hand with torn pieces of dhalpuri. Add sides of kouseband (long beans) and masala aardappel, and finish with a cold Fernandes soft drink or a bottle of Parbo.
Insider Tip
Skip the lunch rush (11:30ΓÇô13:00) by using the drive-thru window, or come mid-afternoon when the line thins and the roti is still fresh off the tawa. Ask for extra masala sauce on the side ΓÇö it's not on the printed menu but they'll always oblige if you ask nicely in Sranan Tongo ('wan pikin moro sowsu, tangi').
