Why Go
This is the only zoo in Suriname, and it's less a menagerie than a crash course in the country's wild interior ΓÇö jaguars, anacondas, scarlet ibis and king vultures, most of them rescued locals rather than international imports. Tucked into the leafy Cultuurtuin, it's the fastest way to meet the Amazon's neighbors without a boat and a week off.
The Experience
Set inside Paramaribo's old 'Culture Garden,' the zoo feels more like a shaded botanical walk with animals along the way than a big-city attraction. Paths wind under mango and flamboyant trees, macaws squawk overhead, and you'll usually share the grounds with Surinamese families picnicking on the lawns. It's compact ΓÇö you can loop it in 90 minutes ΓÇö but the mix of jungle cats, giant snakes, caimans dozing in green pools, and a walk-through aviary of tropical birds punches well above the size. A 2020 revitalization added more naturalistic enclosures and a small children's water park, so the whole place has a friendlier, less concrete feel than travelers may remember from older reviews.
What to Try
Head straight for the jaguar and puma enclosures before the midday heat sends the cats into the shadows. Don't skip the reptile house ΓÇö the anaconda and boa constrictors are genuinely the size of local legend. The aviary section, with scarlet ibis, toucans, and the almost prehistoric-looking king vulture, is the photographers' favorite. Kids gravitate to the petting area with capybaras and small mammals, and to the water park section on hot afternoons. Bring a few Surinamese dollars in coins for the small feed cups sold near the entrance.
Insider Tip
Go in the first hour after opening. Tropical animals check out by 11am when the equatorial sun hits, and the paths are noticeably cooler and quieter. Locals also know the on-site snack kiosk is unreliable — grab a broodje or a fresh markoesa juice at 'T Vat or a nearby sidewalk café beforehand and treat the shaded picnic tables as your lunch spot.

Typical hours are roughly 9amΓÇô5pm daily (call ahead on public holidays; +597 545275). Entrance fee is very modest by international standards and payable in SRD cash ΓÇö card machines are unreliable. Bring water, insect repellent, and a hat; shade is generous but humidity is not. Allow 1.5ΓÇô2 hours. Wheelchair access is limited on some of the older gravel paths.
