Set in the savanna forest around Zanderij, Palulu Nature Lodging is part campground, part eco-lodge, and part backyard jungle. The property stretches across roughly 24 hectares of untouched creek and forest, with a mix of sustainable air-conditioned cabanas, a two-bedroom holiday home, tent pitches and covered hammock terraces ΓÇö so budget backpackers and comfort-seekers share the same soundtrack of parrots and cicadas. Meals are communal and cooked by the proprietors, blending Surinamese and international influences, and evenings unfold slowly by the natural creek pool. The location ΓÇö 15 minutes from Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport ΓÇö makes it a genius first- or last-night stopover, but the wildlife density (part of a hotspot with ~450 recorded bird species, three monkey species, 24 hummingbirds, plus caimans and the occasional anaconda) is what makes people extend their stay.
What to Try
Book a sunrise safari drive with the lodge for the best chance at spotting toucans, macaws and parrots on the wing. After breakfast, cool off in the natural creek pool, then borrow a bike to explore the sandy savanna tracks. Come dusk, join a guided night walk ΓÇö the forest lights up with frogs, tarantulas, caimans and nocturnal mammals you'll never see by day. Don't skip a family-style dinner with the owners; it's where trip tips and rum-soaked stories flow.

Ask for one of the newer sustainable cabanas rather than a standard room ΓÇö they're set slightly deeper in the forest, catch the morning light through the canopy, and put you in prime position for a pre-dawn birding walk before the day-trippers arrive. If you're flying in late, message ahead: the lodge can arrange a pickup so you skip the taxi haggle at arrivals.
The Practical Stuff
Address: Weg naar Kraka 11, Zanderij, Suriname ΓÇö about 15 minutes by car from Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM) and roughly an hour south of Paramaribo. A 24-hour front desk, shared kitchen, BBQ facilities and terrace are on site, plus bike and hammock rental. Bring insect repellent, a headlamp for the trails, and cash in SRD for extras ΓÇö card acceptance in the Para district is patchy. Best visited in the drier months (roughly FebruaryΓÇôApril and AugustΓÇôNovember) when the trails are easier and birding is at its peak.
