Most travelers assume the Guianas are impossible to string together, three tiny countries, three languages, three visa regimes, and barely a road between them. Oetsi Tours has spent more than a decade quietly proving otherwise, and they remain one of the very few operators in Paramaribo who can actually deliver a cross-border itinerary without the wheels falling off.
The Experience
Oetsi runs the full spectrum, from a half-day Paramaribo heritage walk around the UNESCO-listed wooden inner city, to multi-week overland expeditions that hop from Suriname into Guyana's Kaieteur Falls and on into French Guiana's Kourou space center. What sets them apart is the ground handling: their own vehicles, in-house guides who speak Dutch, English, French and Sranan Tongo, and long-standing relationships with jungle lodges deep in the interior (think Palumeu, Kabalebo, Awarradam) where independent booking is genuinely painful. Groups tend to be small, and pace is dictated by the rivers and the weather more than by a clipboard.
What to Try
If you only have a few days, take their Upper Suriname River trip to a Saramaccan Maroon village, that's the itinerary they've refined the most and it's the one that consistently gets the best reviews. Longer stays should ask specifically about their combined Suriname + Guyana overland, which uses the Corantijn river crossing at South Drain rather than flights, and about their Galibi turtle-nesting excursions between February and July when leatherbacks come ashore.
Insider Tip
Book directly with the Parijsstraat office by email or phone rather than through a third-party aggregator, prices are meaningfully lower and you'll get the senior guides. Also, be explicit up front about dietary needs and mobility limits: interior lodges have no way to improvise once you're upriver, and the guides plan provisions days in advance.
