Murphy's Irish Pub: Paramaribo's Original Irish Corner
Draft beer, leprechaun wings, and a four-sided fireplace in the middle of Suriname.
Why Go
Somewhere between the Amazon and the equator, a proper Irish pub is pouring cold pints, roaring trivia questions across the room, and somehow keeping a fireplace lit year-round. Murphy's has been Paramaribo's off-duty living room since 2003 ΓÇö the first (and still the most convincing) Irish pub in Suriname, tucked into the International Mall on Ringweg-Zuid.
The Experience
Walk in after sundown and Murphy's does a very specific trick: it feels like Dublin decided to move to the tropics without changing its wardrobe. Dark wood, taps lined up, football on a wall of flat screens, and ΓÇö the flex of the room ΓÇö a four-sided fireplace anchoring the indoor bar. The crowd is a mash-up you don't get anywhere else in Paramaribo: Surinamese regulars, expats debriefing the workweek, and travelers who wandered in for one drink and stayed for trivia night. Grab a stool at the bar for the pub feel, or slip out to the terrace when the humidity breaks and you want to hear yourself talk. Service is unhurried in the best sense ΓÇö this is a place to settle in, not to eat and run.
What to Try
Start with the leprechaun hot wings ΓÇö they're the house signature and hotter than they look, so order the garlic fries as a cooling wingman. The kitchen leans hearty pub classics with a Surinamese-Brazilian churrasco streak, so if you're hungry, a grilled plate holds up better than the burger. On the drinks side, they actually know their way around a gin and tonic (rare in a beer town), but the correct order is a cold draft from the taps ΓÇö it's the whole reason people come here instead of the mall's other options. Ask what's on the daily specials board before you commit.
Insider Tip
Time your visit around trivia night ΓÇö dates rotate, so ask the bartender when the next one lands and reserve a small table if you're in a group of four or more, because regulars fill the room fast. Also: Murphy's doesn't open until 5 PM, so it's an evening play only. If you're pub-crawling with a Surinamese local, this is the stop where you switch from Parbo lagers to something on draft you can't get anywhere else in town.
