A garden-set Indonesian institution in Paramaribo's Little Java, plating rijsttafel and saoto with 15+ years of family polish.

Why Go

Paramaribo has warungs on almost every Blauwgrond corner, but Mirosso is where locals go when they want the same Javanese-Surinamese flavors served at a linen-clean table under a pergola strung with lights and lulled by a courtyard fountain. It's the sit-down version of the neighborhood's street-food heritage ΓÇö still deeply Indonesian, just dressed for a night out.

The Experience

You'll find Mirosso on Josephine Samson Greenstraat in Blauwgrond, the historically Javanese quarter northeast of the city center where Suriname's Indonesian community has been cooking its ancestral food for generations. Skip the sterile indoor dining room and ask for a table on the garden terrace: pergola overhead, a small trickling fountain, ceiling fans pushing warm evening air, and Surinamese-Dutch-Javanese chatter drifting between tables of families, expat regulars, and off-duty government workers. Service is warm but unhurried ΓÇö this is a place to order a Parbo, work through a shared rijsttafel, and let the evening stretch. The kitchen is family-run and has been for over 15 years, which shows in the sambal balance and the fact that even the vegetable sides feel considered rather than filler.

What to Try

The **saoto soup** — a clear, deeply layered chicken broth with crispy shallots, bean sprouts, boiled egg and shredded chicken — is the dish most reviewers rank as reason enough to come; it's the Surinamese-Javanese soul food you want on your first night in Paramaribo. Follow it with **kipsaté** (chicken satay in a genuinely peanutty sauce, not the sweet gloop you get elsewhere) and either a **nasi rames** or the full **rijsttafel** for the table so you can taste petjil, telo, sambal goreng and a few curries at once. Portions come in regular and 'extra' — the extra is genuinely large, so order accordingly.

Insider Tip

Come Tuesday through Thursday evening if you want the garden without a wait ΓÇö Fridays and Saturdays fill up fast and the kitchen stays open until 2 AM, but the tempo is very different. Mirosso is closed Mondays, which trips up a lot of first-time visitors, and it doesn't open for lunch at all, so plan it as a dinner destination. Cash in SRD is smoothest; card acceptance in Blauwgrond can be inconsistent.
