Lee's Korean Restaurant
Paramaribo's only Korean kitchen ΓÇö quietly serious about bibimbap and fried chicken
Why Go
In a city where roti, pom and Javanese warungs dominate the food conversation, Lee's is the plot twist: a family-run Korean spot on Mahonylaan turning out crackly fried chicken, homemade kimchi and vegetable-piled bibimbap that Korean travelers describe as reassuringly homey.
The Experience
Don't come for the décor — the room is modest, softly lit and feels like time stopped somewhere around opening night. Come for the ritual: a small stack of banchan lands first, the owner drifts over to steer you toward whatever's freshest, and dishes arrive at a leisurely pace that rewards a long, conversational dinner. It's calm, unhurried and skews couples and small groups rather than a crowd scene. Service is famously patient with dietary requests — vegetarians are quietly accommodated with a made-to-order bibimbap, and the kitchen will dial heat up or down without fuss.
What to Try
The Korean fried chicken is the headliner ΓÇö crunchy, glossy and sweet-hot in the way it should be. Bibimbap is the other essential: a hot stone bowl of rice, vegetables, egg and gochujang that's genuinely worth the wait. Round it out with the fried fish in garlic sauce, the spicy seafood special, and a side of the house kimchi, which is fermented on-site. Finish with the cinnamon-spiced homemade iced tea ΓÇö a small, unexpected signature you won't find elsewhere in Paramaribo.
Insider Tip
Bring a Mastercard or cash ΓÇö Visa is not accepted, and there's no ATM on the block. Portions run smaller than Surinamese norms, so order one more dish than you think you need and share family-style; that's also how you unlock the best of the menu. Lunchtime (11:00ΓÇô15:00) is noticeably quieter and a smart pick if you want the owner's full attention on recommendations.
