Why Go
You'll hear Knini Paati before you see it - the constant roar of the Ferulasi Sula rapids braiding around the island where the lodge sits. Reaching it takes three hours over red-dirt road from Paramaribo and another hour by korjaal (dugout canoe) upriver, and that journey is very much the point. Once you're here, you're deep in the interior, on a slip of jungle in the Boven-Suriname, staying at what is quietly the only high-end jungle resort in the country managed by the Saamaka Maroon community itself.
The Experience
The resort is 13 timber lodges spread along the riverbank, each with private terrace, hot-and-cold-water bathroom and (rare for the interior) air conditioning after a full renovation. Days move to river rhythm: sunrise coffee watching mist lift off the sula, a swim in the rapids or the freshwater pool, a hammock afternoon, and long candlelit dinners of pom, cassava bread and river fish cooked over open fire. Because staff come from surrounding Saamaka villages, evenings often drift into apinti drumming, seketi songs and stories about how the community reclaimed this stretch of river. The soundtrack is cicadas, howler monkeys at dawn, and always the water.
What to Try
Take the guided boat trip up to Gran Dan and the neighbouring villages of Pikin Slee (home of the Saamaka Marron Museum) and Botopasi - this is the cultural heart of the trip, not an add-on. Ask about a jungle hike to look for poison-dart frogs and the giant kankantrie trees, and don't skip a shot of the local ginger-and-rum djogo at the bar before dinner.

Book a river-facing lodge on the upstream side of the island - you get the full white-noise of the Ferulasi rapids to sleep to, and the best sunrise view straight down the sula. And bring cash in SRD or euros; card payments and mobile signal effectively stop once you leave Atjoni landing.
The Practical Stuff
Location: island in the Ferulasi Sula rapids, Boven-Suriname River near Aurora, Sipaliwini - roughly 200 km south of Paramaribo. Access is via a ~3-hour road transfer to Atjoni followed by a ~1-hour motorised korjaal ride; the lodge arranges the full transfer and it is really the only sensible way in. Typically sold as 3- or 4-day full-board packages including transfers, meals and guided excursions. Best conditions in the long dry season (roughly August to November) and short dry season (February-April); river levels and mosquitoes both rise in the wet months. Bring insect repellent, a head-torch, quick-dry clothes and yellow-fever vaccination proof.
