JamRock ΓÇö Jamaican Yaad Food
Paramaribo's late-night jerk kitchen where Kingston flavors meet Surinamese warmth.
Why Go
Tucked away on Nieuwe Charlesburgweg, this tiny family-run spot has been smoking jerk chicken over pimento wood since 2012 ΓÇö the kind of place where the smell hits you a block away and pulls you in whether you meant to eat or not. Owner Jill Kertotiko Williams runs the show, and on Friday and Saturday nights the little kitchen turns into the closest thing Paramaribo has to a Kingston backyard cookout.
The Experience
JamRock isn't a sit-down-and-linger restaurant so much as a weekend ritual. The vibe is laid-back and unpretentious ΓÇö a handful of tables, reggae drifting from the speakers, and a kitchen that only fires up Friday and Saturday from around 6pm until the small hours. Regulars swing by after work, drink a Parbo while they wait, and leave with a foil-wrapped parcel that scents the whole car on the drive home. Portions are generous, service is warm, and the crowd is a mix of Surinamers who've fallen for jerk and Jamaican expats homesick for a taste of yaad.
What to Try
The jerk chicken is the flagship ΓÇö marinated deep, charred at the edges, and served with a side of your choice: fluffy rice and peas, crisp potato wedges, or the sweet fried cornmeal 'festivals' that soak up sauce beautifully. Go for the jerk pork if it's on that night. Everything comes with a fresh chopped salad and JamRock's signature homemade garlic-mayo sauce (locals ask for extra ΓÇö you should too). Ask about the curry goat and any daily special the kitchen is running.
Insider Tip
Message ahead on WhatsApp (+597 717-2220) before you head over ΓÇö the kitchen is small, they only open two nights a week, and popular items sell out well before closing. If you're planning a group dinner or want to bring the flavor to your Airbnb, they cater with 24 hours' notice and a 60% deposit up front.
The Practical Stuff
Open Friday and Saturday evenings only, roughly 6pm until 2am. Cash-friendly; call or WhatsApp ahead for pickup and to confirm what's cooking that night. It's a takeaway-leaning spot with limited seating, so plan accordingly. Address on file: Nieuwe Charlesburgweg 9, Paramaribo ΓÇö double-check the pin before you drive, as the kitchen has moved before.
