Danpaati River Lodge

Why Go
Two hundred kilometres south of Paramaribo, on a slip of jungle-fringed island in the middle of the Upper Suriname River, Danpaati is the kind of place where the loudest sound is a howler monkey at dawn and the nearest road is half a day away. Run in partnership with the surrounding Saramaccan Maroon villages, it's part eco-lodge, part community project, and completely off the tourist grid.
The Experience
Getting here is part of the story: you'll drive roughly two hours from Paramaribo to the river junction at Atjoni, then trade the car for a low-slung dugout korjaal for another two hours upriver, watching the villages, granite rapids and dense wall of Amazonian jungle slide by. Once on the island you settle into a simple, dark-wood cabana with a hammock strung on the veranda and the river almost at your feet. Days move at the pace of the current ΓÇö swims off the wooden jetty, yoga on a deck suspended above the water, guided walks where local rangers point out medicinal plants their grandparents still use, and evenings around a fire hearing Saramaccan drummers whose ancestors escaped Dutch plantations in the 1800s and built a whole culture in this forest.
What to Try
Book a full-day village visit to nearby Botopasi or Pikin Slee to see the extraordinary Saamaka Museum of tembe woodcarving; ask the lodge to arrange a sunrise river swim before the day heats up; try a plate of pom or a smoky freshwater fish grilled the Maroon way; take the guided rainforest walk that ends at a natural swimming spot in the rapids; and, if the water is high enough, join an afternoon korjaal trip to spot river otters and kingfishers on the smaller side channels.
Insider Tip
The lodge's Paramaribo office on Prinsessenstraat handles all logistics ΓÇö pop in a day or two before departure to confirm your Atjoni transfer, pay in cash (SRD or euros), and pre-order any dietary needs, because once you're on the island there's no ATM, no shop, and patchy signal at best. Also: bring a proper dry-bag and a torch, not just your phone light.

Access is only by pre-arranged transfer via Atjoni (roughly 4 hours door-to-door from Paramaribo). Packages are typically sold as 2- to 4-night all-inclusive stays covering transfers, meals and guided activities; day-tripping isn't really an option. Best months are the drier windows of FebΓÇôApril and AugΓÇôNov, when river levels and jungle trails cooperate. Bring insect repellent, reef-safe sunscreen, quick-dry clothing and cash ΓÇö cards aren't accepted on the island.
