Suriname drives on the left (a colonial-era quirk that surprises most visitors) and rural roads can turn to red mud in the rainy season ΓÇö mid-April through mid-August and again in December. If you're leaving the paved coastal ring, insist on a 4x4 with decent tyres and download offline maps before you go; mobile signal disappears the moment you turn inland. Also: fuel stations are sparse outside the city, so top up in Paramaribo and again in Zanderij before you commit to the interior.
