Why Go
For more than 15 years Club Manilla has been the loudest, sweatiest, most reliable answer to the question every visitor eventually asks in Paramaribo: 'so where do people actually go out?' It sits right on Zwartenhovenbrugstraat, one of the city's main arteries, and pulls a mixed crowd of Surinamese regulars, Dutch expats and curious travellers onto the same dance floor until sunrise.
The Experience
From the outside it looks unassuming, but push through the door after about 11pm and you land in a proper club: dark room, coloured lights, a serious sound system and a DJ working through Caribbean, Latin and hip-hop with detours into soca, reggaeton, kaseko and Dutch-language hits. Drinks are ordered at the bar ΓÇö Parbo beer, rum-and-cokes, cane spirits ΓÇö and there is space to actually dance rather than just stand and pose. It is more neighbourhood party than velvet-rope lounge, which is exactly why it works.
What to Try
Start with an ice-cold Parbo (the local pilsner practically is the national drink), then move to a Borgoe rum with cola or coconut water once the floor fills up. If the DJ drops a kaseko set, that is the moment to stop watching and join in ΓÇö it is the sound of Suriname and locals will happily show you the steps.
Insider Tip
Nothing happens before 11pm and the room only really peaks between 1 and 3am, so eat a proper dinner in the centre first and pace yourself. Fridays and Saturdays are the big nights; entry is generally free but bring small SRD notes for the bar and the parking attendants outside, and grab a taxi back to your hotel rather than walking Zwartenhovenbrugstraat late.
