Cardy Adventures & Bike Rental: Paramaribo's Old-School Ticket to Suriname's Wild Side

Since 1992, this family-run outfit has been putting travelers on cruiser bikes and dropping them into Suriname's rivers, rainforests, and river-dolphin sunsets.

Why Go

Most visitors to Paramaribo circle the same colonial blocks and wonder where the real Suriname starts. It starts here, on Cornelis Jongbawstraat, where Cardy hands you the keys to a beat-up-but-loved cruiser or books you onto a boat that leaves in the morning fog. Three decades of guiding means the owners still remember which side street has the best pom, and which creek the pink dolphins prefer.

The Experience

Cardy runs out of a low-key compound in the Rainville neighborhood, a 15-minute walk from the historic center and just 200 metres from Torarica. Roll up and you'll find one of the biggest, most eclectic bike fleets in the Caribbean ΓÇö big-cushion cruisers for pottering along the Suriname River, sturdier mountain bikes for the Commewijne plantation loop, kids' bikes, tandems, the works. The vibe is more neighborhood workshop than slick tour desk: paper maps, hand-drawn route notes, and a guide who'll walk you through the pothole hotspots before you clip in. If you'd rather someone else drive, the same team runs guided city rides, birdwatching mornings, dolphin-spotting sunset cruises, Galibi turtle-nesting trips, and multi-day jungle expeditions deep into Palumeu, Raleigh Falls/Voltzberg, Kasikasima and the Roosevelt Peaks. The apartments on-site (from Γé¼35/night) turn the place into a de facto adventure basecamp ΓÇö many guests rent a room, a bike, and a tour in the same conversation.

What to Try

For a first day: grab a cruiser and pedal the river-dyke to Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam via the Meerzorg ferry ΓÇö flat, shaded, and threaded with old plantation ruins and roti stalls. For a splurge: the Raleigh Falls / Voltzberg expedition, three or four days of granite domes, howler monkeys, and cook-fire meals in the rainforest interior. For an easy win: the late-afternoon dolphin cruise on the Suriname River, timed so the pink Guyana dolphins surface at golden hour. Birders should ask about the dawn city-and-Peperpot Nature Park combo ΓÇö Cardy's guides know the exact bamboo stand where the blood-coloured babbler shows up.

Insider Tip

Book by WhatsApp, not email. The office replies within minutes on +597 878-2968, and if a multi-day expedition is under-booked they'll often quote a friendlier rate than what's on the website ΓÇö especially for shoulder-season departures (May and late-October). Also: ask for a bike with a working bell and a lock, not both are guaranteed, and Paramaribo drivers appreciate the bell.

The Practical Stuff

Address: Cornelis Jongbawstraat 31, Paramaribo (opposite Eco Resort Inn, 200 m from Torarica Hotel, ~15 min walk from the historic center). Phone: +597 422518 ┬╖ WhatsApp: +597 878-2968 ┬╖ Website: cardyadventures.com. Hours vary by season ΓÇö the office typically opens early (around 8:00) for tour departures and closes by early evening; message ahead on Sundays. Bike rentals run from a few hours to multi-month agreements with steep long-stay discounts. Bring cash (SRD or EUR/USD) as a backup for smaller add-ons; larger expeditions can be pre-paid by transfer. Helmets available on request ΓÇö ask, they're not automatic.

Pair It With

  • Torarica Hotel & Casino — Just 200 metres down the street ΓÇö a convenient upscale base, or simply a poolside sundowner after you return the bike.
  • 'T Vat Sidewalk Cafe Guide — The expat-and-local crossroads of Paramaribo, perfect for a cold Parbo Bier debrief once you've dropped off your cruiser.
  • Peperpot Nature Park Guide — A short ride or taxi from Cardy across the river ΓÇö an abandoned coffee plantation turned birding hotspot that pairs perfectly with a Cardy-guided dawn tour.
  • Fort Zeelandia — The historic riverfront fort is an easy 15-minute pedal from Cardy's front gate and a natural bookend to a self-guided city ride.
