Wake to howler monkeys instead of alarm clocks. Set on one of the oldest coffee and cocoa plantations on the Suriname River, this restored estate turns colonial architecture into a genuinely dreamy escape ΓÇö 15 minutes from downtown Paramaribo, but a world away in feel. The Director's Residence, Cocoa House and Coffee House have been carefully brought back to life, and the whole property leans against the 700-acre Peperpot Nature Park, so 'stepping outside for a walk' means slipping straight into rainforest at sunrise.
The Experience
The mood is tropical-serene rather than resort-flashy. Fifty rooms are spread across three historic plantation buildings plus a row of luxury condos with private verandas and little kitchenettes ΓÇö good if you want to linger a few days and cook a mango yourself. Rooms are simple but comfortable, all AC, king beds, private bathrooms, and reliable WiFi. The pool sits in a leafy courtyard, breakfast is an unhurried buffet on the veranda, and the staff strike that rare Surinamese balance of warm without being performative. Come evening, the plantation quiets down completely ΓÇö you'll hear frogs, cicadas, the occasional boat on the river. It's the kind of place couples come for two nights and end up extending to four.
What to Try
Book at least one dinner at the on-site Pepre Patu restaurant ΓÇö the kitchen leans into Surinamese home cooking (pom, moksi meti, fresh river fish) alongside familiar international plates, and it's genuinely the best food within a wide radius of Meerzorg. Rent one of the hotel's bikes at first light and ride the flat plantation trails into Peperpot Nature Park before the heat sets in; you'll almost certainly cross paths with capuchin and squirrel monkeys, and the birdlife (toucans, trogons, kiskadees) is remarkable. If you're staying more than one night, add a guided plantation-history walk and a sunrise boat trip on the Suriname River ΓÇö both can be arranged straight from reception.
Insider Tip
Ask for a room in the Cocoa House if you want the most atmospheric colonial-era feel, or a luxury condo if you're travelling as a family or want space to spread out. The condos on the far end of the property are the quietest and get the best morning light on the veranda. And don't sleep on the sunrise wildlife walk ΓÇö the park officially opens later, but guests can slip in from the hotel side around 6am, which is when the monkeys are most active and you'll have the trails almost to yourself.
