Afobaka Resort: Suriname's Dam-Side Rainforest Hideaway

Why Go
Two and a half hours south of Paramaribo, the tarmac gives way to dense green and the vast, mirror-flat Brokopondo Reservoir opens up in front of you. Afobaka Resort sits right on that shoreline ΓÇö a cluster of seven lodges under the trees where the loudest sound after sunset is a fish rising or a nightjar overhead. It's the kind of place Surinamers themselves drive out to when they need to remember what quiet feels like.
The Experience
You arrive along the Afobakaweg with the dam wall in view, then peel off into a compound of stilted wooden lodges tucked between palms. Cozy, Family, and River lodges each come with AC, a proper kitchen, a real bathroom and a broad terrace pointed at the water ΓÇö a rare mix of comfort and wilderness this far into the interior. Days move at reservoir pace: a swim off the deck before the heat, a boat glide out over drowned rainforest (the reservoir famously flooded 1,500 sq km of jungle in the 1960s, and the tree stumps still poke through the surface), a lunch of pom or moksi-meti back at the restaurant, then a forest walk or a paddle around a hidden inlet. Sunsets over the water ΓÇö pink, gold, then instantly star-strewn ΓÇö are the main event. The vibe is unpolished but genuinely warm; think family-run river lodge rather than resort in the polished-brochure sense.
What to Try
Book a morning boat tour with the resort's skippers ΓÇö you'll skim across the reservoir past submerged forest and, on a good day, spot pink river dolphins, howler monkeys in the canopy, and kingfishers working the shallows. Anglers should ask about a peacock bass ('toekoenari') trip; the Brokopondo is legendary for them. Back on land, order the fresh-caught fish of the day at the restaurant ΓÇö usually anjoemara or paku, grilled over wood ΓÇö and pair it with a cold Parbo beer on the terrace. If you can, stay for a Saranti (Saramaccan Maroon) village visit; the surrounding Brokopondo District is the heartland of Maroon culture and a guided visit is far more meaningful than doing it solo.

Come mid-week and ask for a River Lodge ΓÇö the Cozy lodges are cheaper but set further back, and the whole point of being here is waking up with the reservoir at your feet. Cash (SRD or USD) is king out here: card machines are patchy at best and there's no ATM for miles, so hit one in Paramaribo before you leave. And bring a headlamp ΓÇö the lodges have power but the paths between them turn pitch black once the generator hum fades.
The Practical Stuff
Location: Afobakaweg, near the Afobaka Dam, Brokopondo District ΓÇö roughly a 2.5-hour drive south of Paramaribo on a mostly paved road (a regular sedan handles it fine). Day-trippers pay a small entrance fee (around USD 5) that gets you use of the grounds and swimming area; the on-site restaurant runs roughly 9amΓÇô9pm daily. Lodges sleep 1ΓÇô16 and typically run USD 140ΓÇô300/night depending on size and season. Book direct through the resort or via WhatsApp ΓÇö response times are much faster than email. Bring insect repellent, reef-safe sunscreen, a swimsuit, and light long sleeves for dusk. Mobile signal is spotty; treat it as a feature, not a bug. Dry season (FebΓÇôApr, AugΓÇôNov) is the most reliable for boat tours and clear water.
