Chateaubelair sits at the far north-western end of St. Vincent, where the leeward road effectively runs out beneath La Soufrière. It is a small, quiet town on a deep bay with dark sand, a long way from anywhere, and it is the base for two of the island's best waterfalls — Dark View Falls, which comes down in two tiers and is reached across a bamboo bridge, and Trinity Falls, which takes a rough drive and a walk into the forest. It is also as close as the road comes to the volcano that dominates this end of the island.

The Experience

The drive up the leeward coast to get here is the longest and most beautiful on St. Vincent, hairpinning between the hills and the sea through village after village. Chateaubelair itself is small and unhurried, with the bay in front and Richmond Beach along the shore, and the great mass of La Soufrière behind. The 2021 eruption fell heavily on this side of the island, and the landscape and the community both still show it — ash-scarred slopes, rebuilt buildings, and a matter-of-fact way of talking about evacuation that visitors do not expect. Inland the rivers come down fast out of the forest, which is why the waterfalls here are as good as they are. There is very little commercial activity and no tourism infrastructure to speak of. The remoteness is genuine rather than atmospheric. This is the furthest point on the island from the airport and the capital, the road beyond effectively ends, and the volcano that closes the horizon is the same one that emptied these villages in 2021. Very few places in the eastern Caribbean feel this far from anything.

What to Try

Go to Dark View Falls, which is the more accessible of the two — a short walk from the road across a bamboo bridge to a two-tier fall with a pool at the bottom, and one of the most photographed places on the island. Trinity Falls is the harder and better one: a rough track and then a walk down into a gorge, and worth taking a guide for. The Wallibou River comes down beside the road. Richmond Beach is the black-sand stretch nearby. Eat at the Beach Front restaurant and bar or Sweetness Hideout, which is about the extent of the options. If you intend to climb La Soufrière from this side, arrange a guide and check current advisories — the volcano is genuinely active. The bay in front of the town is deep and sheltered, and yachts use it as an anchorage.

Treat this as a full day from Kingstown, not an afternoon. It is well over an hour each way on a road that cannot be hurried, the falls take time once you are here, and the light in the valleys goes early because of the hills. Take a guide for Trinity Falls — the track is rough, the descent is steep, and the route is not obvious. And check volcano advisories before planning anything on the upper slopes; La Soufrière erupted seriously in 2021 and conditions at the top change.

The Practical Stuff

Chateaubelair is about an hour and a quarter north of Kingstown on the leeward road, and roughly an hour and a half from Argyle International. Driving is on the LEFT and a temporary local permit is required; the leeward road is narrow, steep and winding throughout and slow in both directions. Minibuses run the route but infrequently this far north. Facilities are minimal — a couple of small restaurants and village shops, no supermarket of any size. The beaches here are black volcanic sand. The 2021 eruption affected this area substantially, and volcano advisories should be checked before going onto the upper slopes. St. Vincent is in the hurricane belt, roughly June to November.
