Why Go
Just 2 km from downtown Castries and separated from Vigie Beach by nothing more than a low seawall, George F.L. Charles (SLU) is the rarest kind of Caribbean airport: one where you can watch turboprops skim the palm tops from a beach lounger, then stroll across the road and check in. Originally a WWII airstrip built by the U.S. Army Air Forces as Vigie Airport, it's now Saint Lucia's regional hub, moving island-hoppers, day-trippers, and yacht crews between the capital and the wider Eastern Caribbean.
The Experience
SLU feels less like an international terminal and less like a small-town bus station in the best possible way. There's a single compact terminal, one runway hugging the Caribbean Sea, and lines that rarely have you standing more than a few minutes. Because the airport sits inside Castries proper, the arrivals hall spills you almost immediately into the buzz of the capital: honking route minibuses, the scent of grilled fish drifting from beach kiosks, and taxis idling under flamboyant trees. Departures are equally low-drama; most passengers arrive 60–90 minutes before their flight, sip a Piton lager at the cafe, and watch LIAT, interCaribbean, or Air Antilles ATRs bank in over Vigie Peninsula. If your bags are already checked, you can genuinely wander out, dip your toes in the sea, and be back at the gate before boarding.
What to Try
Time your arrival to catch a landing from Vigie Beach itself — the approach path runs so close to the sand that the aircraft feel like they're taxiing over your umbrella. Grab a rôti or a fish cake at one of the small food kiosks directly opposite the departure lounge (cheaper and better than anything airside), and if you have an hour to kill on a layover, walk the ten minutes into Castries for a look at the Derek Walcott Square and the Castries Central Market. Regional flights out of SLU are also the fastest, prettiest way to reach Martinique, Barbados, Dominica, or St. Vincent — the ATR climbs give you postcard views of the Pitons on the way south.
Insider Tip
Don't confuse SLU with Hewanorra (UVF) in the south — this is the single most common mistake visitors make. If your hotel is anywhere from Rodney Bay to Marigot Bay, SLU saves you a punishing 60–90-minute cross-island transfer. Book regional connections through SLU whenever possible, even if it means a short hop from UVF; the difference in arrival experience (a 5-minute taxi to Castries vs. a switchback drive over the interior) is enormous. And always confirm the taxi fare with your driver before you close the door — rates are set by zone but negotiated in practice.

Location: Vigie, 2 km north of downtown Castries. Terminal: single, compact, no jet bridges — all boarding is by walk-out. Airlines: primarily LIAT/interCaribbean, Air Antilles, Silver Airways and charters (regional Caribbean routes only; no transatlantic or U.S. mainline service). Ground transport: metered taxis, pre-arranged hotel transfers, route minibuses, and on-site car rental desks; taxis to Castries run 5 minutes, Rodney Bay 20–25 minutes. Facilities: cafe, small duty-free, souvenir shops, ATM/banking, car hire counters. Recommended arrival: 90 minutes before regional departures. Nearby: Vigie Beach (across the road), Castries city centre, Vigie Lighthouse.
