St. Kitts Scenic Railway
The last railway in the West Indies, riding the old sugar line around the island.
Why Go
Built in 1912 to haul cane from the fields to the Basseterre mill, this narrow-gauge line is the sole surviving passenger railway in the Caribbean. Today the double-decker cars trace a roughly three-hour loop around the island's north coast, chasing ocean cliffs, rainforest slopes, and the ghost architecture of the sugar era, all with a rum punch in your hand.
The Experience
You board a custom-built double-decker carriage ΓÇö open-air seating with breezes and unobstructed views up top, air-conditioned lounge downstairs ΓÇö and settle in as the train clanks north out of Needsmust. The ride covers about 18 miles by rail with a motor-coach segment completing the circuit, so you see roughly 30 miles of coastline in total. A live guide narrates the sugar heritage while a small a cappella choir of Kittitian women moves through the cars singing hymns and calypso. Bridges span deep ghauts (river gorges) with the Atlantic surf crashing far below on one side and Mount Liamuiga's rainforest rising on the other. Locals wave from doorsteps as you pass through villages like Cayon, Tabernacle, and Saddlers.
What to Try
Head straight to the upper deck at boarding for the best breeze and 360-degree sightlines ΓÇö the AC lounge is a nice break for the last stretch. Grab a rum punch (or the non-alcoholic tropical version) from the bar and sample the traditional sugar cake handed out mid-ride. Have your camera ready for the tall steel trestle bridges over the ghauts on the Atlantic side, and for the ruined stone chimneys and windmill towers of the abandoned sugar estates.
Insider Tip
Sit on the LEFT side of the carriage on the outbound leg ΓÇö that's the ocean/Atlantic-facing side for the most dramatic coastal vistas and the ghaut bridges. Cruise-ship days sell out fast, so if you're staying on-island book a scheduled departure at least a day or two ahead. Bring a light layer or windbreaker; the upper deck gets breezy at speed even in tropical heat.
The Practical Stuff
Departures run from the Needsmust Station near Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (a few minutes from the cruise pier by shuttle). The full experience takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours (train ride plus connecting motor-coach segment). Complimentary drinks (rum punch, beer, soft drinks, water) and light snacks are included. The train primarily operates when cruise ships are in port, so schedules vary ΓÇö check the current calendar before planning. Restrooms are on board. Wheelchair access is limited due to the carriage stairs; call ahead if needed.
