Why Go

Sprawled across the narrow neck of Frigate Bay with the calm Caribbean on one side and the wilder Atlantic just over the ridge, the St. Kitts Marriott is the island's largest resort ΓÇö a self-contained mini-village of restaurants, a 35,000 sq ft casino, a spa, three pools and the championship Royal St. Kitts Golf Club right next door.

The Experience

You feel the scale the second you walk through the open-air lobby: mahogany ceilings, trade winds cutting through, and a long sightline straight out to the sea. It's a big American-brand resort, but the Kittitian personality bleeds through ΓÇö steel pan at sunset by the pool bar, staff who actually remember your name by day two, and a beach lined with free cabanas that fill up fast on cruise-ship days. Days drift between the swim-up bar, the Emerald Mist Spa, and the golf course; nights split between the Royal Beach Casino's blackjack tables and long dinners at one of the eight on-site restaurants. It's not a boutique boutique-y stay ΓÇö it's a proper resort ΓÇö but for a first trip to St. Kitts, the convenience of having everything from a steakhouse to a sushi bar to a golf course inside the gate is hard to beat.

What to Try

Book a dinner at Royal Grille Steakhouse for the aged cuts, or graze Calypso for a Caribbean buffet leaning on local fish, mango and coconut. Grab a rum flight at the lobby bar before wandering into the Royal Beach Casino (one of the Caribbean's largest). Play at least nine holes at Royal St. Kitts Golf Club ΓÇö the ocean-view holes on the Atlantic side are the ones worth remembering ΓÇö and block off a morning for a beachside massage in an Emerald Mist cabana.

Insider Tip

The 'Strip' of local bars and beach shacks on South Frigate Bay is a five-minute cab (or 15-minute walk) away ΓÇö leave the resort at least one night to eat conch fritters and drink Carib beers with locals at Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack or Buddies Beach Hut. It's the antidote to buffet fatigue and the best way to feel like you actually visited St. Kitts.

The Practical Stuff

Address: 858 Frigate Bay Road, Frigate Bay, St. Kitts. About 10 minutes from Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and 15 minutes from the Basseterre cruise port. Check-in 4pm / check-out 11am. Multiple restaurants and the casino are open to non-guests.

Pair It With

  • Royal St. Kitts Golf Club — The adjacent championship course wraps around the property with holes on both the Caribbean and Atlantic ΓÇö steps from your room.
  • The Strip at South Frigate Bay — A short stroll away, this cluster of open-air beach bars is where locals and in-the-know visitors go for grilled lobster, ribs and rum at sunset.
  • Timothy Hill Overlook — A five-minute drive up the road for the classic photo where you can see both the Caribbean and Atlantic at once.
  • Brimstone Hill Fortress — A UNESCO World Heritage site about 45 minutes away ΓÇö the natural half-day cultural pairing to a resort-heavy trip.
