A rickety, rum-soaked institution on South Frigate Bay where Kittitians, expats and cruise-day escapees all end up on the same picnic bench, plate of lobster in hand and toes in the sand.
The Experience
Shiggidy Shack is exactly what its name promises: a weather-beaten wooden bar hung with buoys, flags and fairy lights, spilling straight onto the calm Caribbean side of Frigate Bay. By day it's a low-key beach hangout ΓÇö plastic chairs, hammocks, a friendly staff that will happily set you up with a lounger and a Carib beer while you dip in and out of the water. By night it becomes the loudest, warmest party on the Strip, with a bonfire crackling on the sand, a live band or karaoke mic taking over the deck, and a mixed crowd of locals, second-homers and travellers who wander down from the nearby resorts. It's scrappy, unpolished and pure St. Kitts ΓÇö the antithesis of the manicured Christophe Harbour scene a few miles south.
What to Try
The whole grilled Caribbean lobster is the headline act ΓÇö split, brushed with garlic butter and served with rice, peas and a mountain of festival. Beyond that, go for the grilled mahi mahi, coconut shrimp, jerk chicken or a classic conch chowder. Wash it down with a Ting-and-Cane Spirit (the local rum-and-grapefruit-soda combo) or one of Mr. X's rum punches, which arrive in a plastic cup and hit harder than they look.
Insider Tip
Thursday is the night: the beach bonfire draws the biggest, best-mixed crowd of the week and the kitchen is fully fired up for lobster. Saturday karaoke and Sunday's MRT band sessions are the local favourites ΓÇö arrive by sunset to grab a proper table on the sand rather than a stool at the back. Bring cash (or small US bills) for drinks; card service can be slow when it's busy.
The Practical Stuff
On South Frigate Bay beach ("The Strip"), about 10 minutes by taxi from Basseterre or Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and walking distance from most Frigate Bay hotels. Open daily from late morning through late night, with kitchen hours tightening on quieter afternoons ΓÇö call ahead if you're specifically coming for lobster. Very casual: swimsuit and cover-up is standard by day, shorts and flip-flops at night. Family-friendly early, adult-leaning after the band kicks in.
