Why Go

On an island where fewer than 3,300 people share the whole rock, Villa L'Oasis gives you a five-bedroom stone hideout tucked into Knippenga Estate — the Quill rising behind you, the Caribbean spread in front, and St. Kitts and St. Barth framing the horizon like bookends. It's the kind of place where you unlock the gate, drop your bags by the pool, and realize the loudest thing you'll hear all week is a tropicbird.

The Experience

L'Oasis sits above Oranjestad on the flanks of the Quill, Statia's long-dormant volcano, so mornings start with mist curling off the crater rim and afternoons finish with a swim in the private pool while the sun drops behind Saba. The villa itself sleeps a proper group — five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a full chef's kitchen with dishwasher and washer, air-con throughout, fast Wi-Fi, and a barbecue terrace built for long dinners. Continental breakfast can be delivered each morning if you don't feel like cooking. Because Statia has no cruise traffic and barely any tour buses, the pace outside your gate matches the pace inside it: unhurried, uncrowded, and refreshingly analog.

What to Try

Hike the Quill crater trail — the trailhead is a short drive from the villa and drops you into a rainforest inside the volcano. Book a two-tank dive on the Blue Bead Hole or the Charles L. Brown wreck (Statia is a Caribbean diving sleeper hit). Spend a lazy morning at Zeelandia or Oranje Bay, then wander the 17th-century ruins of Fort Oranje and Lower Town's cobbled Bay Path. Between December and April, keep binoculars on the terrace — humpbacks migrate right through the channel below the villa.

Insider Tip

Rent a car through the villa on arrival rather than at the airport counter — Statia is 8 square miles but the roads to the Quill trailhead, the dive shops in Lower Town, and dinner spots like Ocean View Terrace all require wheels, and evenings you'll want the freedom to drive back up the hill with groceries and a bottle of wine from the Duggins supermarket.

The Practical Stuff

Address: Knippenga Estate, above Oranjestad, Sint Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands. Getting there: 20-minute Winair hop from Sint Maarten (SXM) to F.D. Roosevelt Airport (EUX), then a 10-minute drive up to the estate. Layout: 5 bedrooms / 5 bathrooms, private pool, BBQ, full kitchen, laundry, AC, Wi-Fi, free parking. Best for groups of 8–10. Continental breakfast optional. Currency is USD. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — required for diving and snorkeling in the Statia Marine Park.

Pair It With

  • The Quill National Park — The volcano literally rises behind the villa — a half-day hike into its rainforested crater is the signature Statia experience and starts minutes from your front door.
  • Scubaqua or Golden Rock Dive & Nature Resort dive center — Statia's marine park is one of the Caribbean's least-crowded dive scenes; pair villa mornings with afternoon two-tank dives on wrecks and blue-bead sites.
  • Ocean View Terrace Guide — Statia's classic sunset dinner spot beside Fort Oranje, an easy drive down from Knippenga when you want a night out without leaving the island's charm behind.
  • Fort Oranje & the Lower Town ruins — A walkable slice of 17th-century Dutch West India Company history right below the villa — perfect for a cooler late-afternoon wander before returning to the pool.
  • Baby Beach & Zeelandia Bay — Two contrasting shores nearby: sheltered swimming on one side of the island, dramatic Atlantic surf on the other — ideal half-day pairings with villa downtime.
