Why Go
Tucked into the northwest corner of Sint Eustatius inside Boven National Park, Venus Bay isn't a beach you stumble onto — you earn it. There's no sand to lounge on and no swimming to be had, just black volcanic boulders, thundering surf, and the kind of silence that makes you realize how far you are from anywhere. For hikers who want the whole Caribbean to themselves for an afternoon, this is Statia's payoff.
The Experience
The Boven Trail delivers you to Venus Bay after roughly a 3-hour round-trip trek across the northern hills, weaving through dry forest, thorny scrub, and cactus-studded volcanic ridgelines with the sea flashing blue in every direction. You'll likely see more soldier crabs and iguanas than people. When you finally drop down to the bay, the Atlantic slams into the rocks with real force — this is a place to sit, watch, listen, and take a few photos, not to wade in. On a clear day you can see Saba and St. Kitts on either side of the ridge, and pelicans wheel just offshore.
What to Try
Do the full Boven Trail loop rather than an out-and-back if you have the legs — it links several of the northern peaks (Boven, Bergje, Gilboa Hill, Signal Hill, Venus Bay) and rewards you with 360° views over the island and neighboring volcanic peaks. Bring a proper camera; the contrast of black rock against turquoise surf is one of Statia's most photogenic scenes. If you're staying overnight in Oranjestad, time the hike to end in the late afternoon so you can descend as the light turns golden.

Stop by STENAPA (the St. Eustatius National Parks office) in Oranjestad the day before to buy your hiking tag ($6, valid for the year), pick up a trail map, and ask about recent conditions — the Boven trails get overgrown quickly after rain and the loose scree above Venus Bay can be sketchy if it's wet. Locals will also tell you which junctions have faded markers so you don't end up bushwhacking.
The Practical Stuff
Access is via the Boven Trail trailhead north of Oranjestad; you'll want a car or a lift to the start, as it's not walkable from town. Wear real hiking shoes (not sandals), carry at least 2 liters of water per person, and pack sun protection — there's virtually no shade on the ridgeline. Best done early morning (start by 7am) or after 3pm to dodge the midday heat. No facilities, no signal in stretches, and no swimming — the surf and rocks are dangerous. Go with a buddy if it's your first time on the trail.
