Super Burger
Statia's hilltop burger joint where locals refuel, all day long
Why Go
Perched on Fort Oranjestraat in Upper Town, Super Burger is the closest thing Oranjestad has to a village hangout — a breezy, no-frills grill where dive crews, government workers on lunch break and yachties who've just tied up at the dinghy dock all meet over milkshakes and fish burgers baked on bread that came out of the oven that morning.
The Experience
Don't expect white tablecloths. You order at the counter, grab a chair under the shaded outdoor terrace (or duck into the little air-conditioned dining room when the trade winds gust), and settle in. It leans loud and cheerful at lunchtime, quieter around mid-afternoon, and picks up again at dinner once pizza comes out of the oven at 5pm. Service can run on 'island time' — that's part of the deal — but the owner is easygoing, the regulars will happily tell you what to order, and on Thursdays the crowd rolls in for wings and movie night. It's one of the few spots on Statia that can feed you cheaply from breakfast through late evening without ever feeling like a tourist trap.
What to Try
The classic beef burger is the calling card and consistently rated among the best on the island, but don't sleep on the fish burger — flaky, fresh, and served on that house-baked bun. Pair either with proper hand-cut fries and one of the freshly blitzed milkshakes (pistachio and chocolate chip are the local favourites). If you want to eat like a Statian, ask whether the daily special is goat stew or rice-and-beef-stew and order that instead. Pizza is only available after 5pm, and a scoop of ice cream at the walk-up counter is the standard way islanders end a hot afternoon.
Insider Tip
Super Burger sits directly above its own dinghy dock and it's a two-minute stroll to the customs and immigration office — cruisers routinely check in and then walk straight up for a burger and a cold drink before officially 'arriving' on Statia. Even if you're not on a boat, grab your food to go and walk the short path to Fort Oranje's ramparts for lunch with a full sweep of the anchorage below.
