Why Go
Tucked into Statia's rolling northern hills above Oranjestad, Round Hill is the kind of unassuming lookout that surprises first-time hikers — a short, grassy scramble that suddenly opens onto the Quill volcano, the airstrip below, and the shimmering blue channel out toward Saba and St. Kitts on the horizon.
The Experience
Round Hill sits in the cluster of small volcanic mounds north of the runway, near Signal Hill and Boven. The trail is unmarked and informal — you park on the roadside, follow a faint goat path through dry tropical scrub, and gain elevation quickly. Within 15–20 minutes you're on a breezy grassy summit with a near-360° panorama: the perfect green cone of the Quill dominates the south, the pastel roofs of Oranjestad line the coast to the west, and on clear days Saba's silhouette floats to the northwest with St. Kitts and Nevis to the southeast. Because there's no infrastructure — no railings, no benches, no ticket booth — you almost always have the summit to yourself. Sunset is the hour locals swear by, when the Golden Rock earns its nickname.
What to Try
Time your climb for late afternoon so you reach the top about 45 minutes before sunset — the light on the Quill turns molten gold and the breeze finally cools. Bring a small pair of binoculars: frigatebirds and red-billed tropicbirds ride the thermals along the ridgeline, and on a bright day you can pick out sailboats crossing between the islands. Photographers should shoot from the northeast edge of the summit for the classic Quill-and-coastline composition.

There's no signage, no ticket booth and no shade at the top — locals treat Round Hill as a self-guided detour rather than a formal attraction. Wear closed-toe shoes (the loose volcanic gravel is slippery in either direction), carry more water than you think you need, and skip it entirely in the couple of hours after a rain shower when the trail turns to slick clay. If you'd rather not scout the trailhead yourself, ask STENAPA (the national parks office) in Lower Town — they'll point you to the current best access point, which shifts as vegetation grows in.
The Practical Stuff
Free and open 24/7, but only worth visiting in daylight. Best in the dry season (roughly February–June); trails can be muddy after autumn rains. Allow 45–90 minutes round trip from the roadside. No facilities, no cell service on the summit, and no lighting — be off the hill before dusk unless you've brought a headlamp. Getting there: it's about a 5-minute drive north of Oranjestad; a rental car, scooter or a pre-arranged taxi pickup is essential as there's no public transport.
