The Experience
You'll settle into your own 2- to 5-bedroom villa with a private pool, full kitchen, outdoor grill, and en-suite baths for every room. Mornings begin with the sun climbing over the water and iguanas rustling in the sea grape; evenings end with tapas and a cocktail on the terrace as the Quill fades to silhouette. There's no lobby buzz, no resort choreography — just the wind in the palms, the crackle of your grill, and the sense that the island belongs to you for a week. The on-site Whale Tails Restaurant handles dinner Wednesday through Sunday, and the multi-level Cuba Café upstairs pours cocktails and tapas with a Spanish accent, so you can pretend you're self-catering without ever having to cook.
What to Try
Book the villa with the mountain-and-ocean view (L'Oasis is a longtime favorite), then stock the kitchen from Oranjestad on your way in — groceries are limited, and half the pleasure here is a slow breakfast on your own terrace. Order the fresh catch at Whale Tails at least once, and climb up to Cuba Café for sunset tapas before heading back down to the pool.
Insider Tip
That 'couple of miles of steep track' from Oranjestad is not marketing poetry ΓÇö it's a rutted, unlit black-stone road that will humble a subcompact. Rent the highest-clearance 4x4 the island's tiny fleet has on offer (reserve well ahead ΓÇö Statia has maybe two dozen rentals total), and do your first drive up in daylight so you know the switchbacks before you attempt them after dinner.
The Practical Stuff
Location: high on the western slope of the Quill, roughly 15 minutes by car from F.D. Roosevelt Airport (EUX) and historic Oranjestad. Getting here: fly into St. Maarten (SXM), then Winair's 20-minute hop to Statia; a 4x4 rental is essentially mandatory. Villas sleep 4–10; each has private pool, full kitchen, grill, and Wi-Fi. Whale Tails Restaurant on property serves dinner Wed–Sun and lunch on weekends; Cuba Café upstairs for tapas and cocktails. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a headlamp for the driveway, and cash for smaller vendors in town.
