Statia's nightlife scene is small enough to memorize in an afternoon, and Karina is one of those under-the-radar corner spots that never bothered with a website because everyone on the island already knows where it is. Tucked into a residential stretch of Paramira Weg in Oranjestad, it's the kind of place where the bartender might also be someone's cousin, the music is whatever the room feels like tonight, and 'closing time' is more of a suggestion than a rule.
The Experience
Don't come expecting a curated cocktail menu or Instagram-ready lighting. Karina is a working local bar with a small kitchen attached, the kind of Caribbean Netherlands watering hole that fills up slowly after dark with a rotating cast of Statian regulars, off-shift NuStar workers, dive instructors decompressing after a day underwater, and the occasional lost researcher from STENAPA. Plastic chairs, cold bottles, a TV usually tuned to whatever match matters that week, and conversation in a fluid mix of English, Dutch, Papiamentu, and Spanish. Weekends bring the most energy; midweek is quieter and better for actually talking to people. The whole thing runs on island time, so pace yourself and settle in.
What to Try
Stick to what the island does well: an ice-cold local beer (a Carib, Presidente, or whatever's coldest in the cooler), a rum and Coke poured with a Caribbean-generous hand, or ask what's on the plate that night — small kitchens on Statia typically rotate through goat stew, stewed chicken, fried snapper, johnny cakes, and rice and peas depending on what came in. If they're grilling, grilled is the move.

Cash (US dollars) is king here — card machines on Statia are unreliable and small bars often don't take plastic at all. Bring small bills, tip in cash, and if you want to eat, ask about food when you order your first drink rather than assuming the kitchen is open all night. Also: greet the room when you walk in. Statia is small, and a friendly 'good night' (the local evening greeting) will earn you more goodwill than any drink order.
The Practical Stuff
Located at 28 Paramira Weg in Oranjestad, a short drive or walkable stroll from Upper Town depending on where you're staying. Hours aren't formally posted — expect evening service that stretches later on Fridays and Saturdays, with quieter or closed nights midweek. Call ahead or ask your guesthouse to check if you're making a special trip. Casual dress, no reservations, cash preferred.

- Aquarium Dive Site — Wind down at Karina after a day exploring one of Statia's signature reef dives just offshore — the post-dive beer hits differently when you've been 60 feet under.
- Historic Oranjestad Upper Town — Spend the late afternoon wandering the ruins of Fort Oranje and the cobbled colonial streets, then drop down to Karina once the sun sets and the heat breaks.
