The Experience
This is a place for travelers who came to St. Eustatius on purpose. The apartment sits in Oranjestad — a walkable grid of Dutch colonial houses perched on a cliff above the anchorage — and it gives you what Statia's handful of guesthouses can't: a fridge for the dive-day sandwiches, air-conditioning for the sticky afternoons, and the freedom to keep your own hours. Two bedrooms mean a dive buddy, a small family, or a working couple fits comfortably, and the confirmed WiFi is a small miracle on a rock this remote. Because Statia rarely hosts more than a few dozen overnight visitors at a time, stepping out your door drops you straight into local rhythms in a way that Aruba or Sint Maarten simply can't offer anymore.
What to Try
Walk down Fort Oranjestraat at sunrise to Fort Oranje, the bastion where in 1776 Statia became the first foreign power to salute the American flag — the view over the roadstead is worth the early alarm. Book a two-tank boat dive with one of the island's operators; the Charles Brown wreck and the coral-covered lava fingers off the leeward coast are why divers cross oceans for this island. Save a full morning for the Quill, the 600-metre dormant volcano whose rainforest crater is unlike anything else in the Leewards. In the evening, cook something simple with produce from the town supermarket, or wander five minutes to a Lower Town restaurant for fresh snapper and a rum punch as the sun drops behind Saba on the horizon.
Insider Tip
Rent a car on arrival day, even for a short stay. Statia is only 21 km², but the dive shops, trailheads, beaches, and airport are all spread out, taxis are informal, and the apartment's Upper Town location only really pays off if you can zip down to Lower Town or across to Zeelandia Beach on your own schedule. Antillean Horde, just around the corner, is the easy neighborhood option.
The Practical Stuff
Located in Oranjestad, the capital of St. Eustatius (Statia) in the Caribbean Netherlands — not to be confused with the same-named capital of Aruba. Upper Town sits on a cliff; expect a short but steep walk down to Lower Town and the dive shops. AC and WiFi are confirmed, which matters on an island where both can be inconsistent. Bring US dollars (the local currency), reef-safe sunscreen, sturdy hiking shoes for the Quill, and a rain shell for tropical showers. F.D. Roosevelt Airport is a five-minute drive; the only flights in are the WinAir hoppers from Sint Maarten.
