Boven National Park

Statia's wild northern hills, where cactus-lined ridges tumble into secret Atlantic bays

Why Go

While every visitor to St. Eustatius makes a pilgrimage up the Quill volcano, Boven's five rugged peaks in the island's north stay blissfully empty — a sun-baked mosaic of grassland, acacia scrub and windswept ridge walks that end at bays you'll likely have entirely to yourself.

The Experience

Boven feels like a different island from the lush Quill. Trails climb through the ghosts of old sisal plantations and a crumbling distillery, then break out onto exposed ridges with the Caribbean on one side and the Atlantic surf pounding the other. Red-billed tropicbirds wheel overhead, kestrels hover on the trade winds, and the only soundtrack is your boots on volcanic gravel. There are seventeen trails between Boven and neighbouring Quill totalling about 21 km, but most people never make it up here — the reward is a raw, uncrowded slice of the Caribbean Netherlands that feels closer to Baja than Barbados.

What to Try

The Venus Bay Trail (about an hour round-trip) is the easiest introduction — a moderate climb over Gilboa Ridge that drops you at a wild, driftwood-strewn cove. If you want the summit, push on to the top of Boven itself (2–3 hours) for panoramic views back over Oranjestad and across to Saba on a clear day. Detour along the Bergje Trail to spot the endemic Statia Morning Glory, or take the Signal Hill and Jenkins Bay routes for solitude and seabird cliffs.

Insider Tip

Start at first light — by 10am the northern hills turn into a solar oven with almost no shade, and STENAPA rangers specifically warn against hiking between 11am and 3pm. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, sturdy grippy shoes (the loose scree on the descents will chew up trail runners), and do NOT swim at Venus Bay no matter how inviting it looks — the rip currents are lethal. Buy your $10 annual hiking tag online or at the STENAPA office in Lower Town before you set out; rangers do check.

The Practical Stuff

Trailhead coordinates: 17.506933, -62.983643, about a 15-minute drive north of Oranjestad on rough track (4x4 or high-clearance vehicle recommended for the last stretch). Entry: $10 per person, valid one calendar year, children under 8 free. Tags available online, at the STENAPA office, dive shops, most hotels, and the port of entry. Park itself is open dawn to dusk with no gate or staff on-site. Contact STENAPA on +599-318-2884 or outreach@statiapark.org. No facilities, no shade, no phone signal on most trails — go prepared and let someone know your route.
