Why Go

On an 18-acre peninsula between a reef-sheltered lagoon and the wild Atlantic, Le Guanahani is the rare St Barth resort that feels like a full-blown Caribbean retreat instead of a boutique villa hotel. Rosewood's 2020 reboot turned Le Guanahani's iconic candy-colored cottages into 66 sea-facing rooms, suites and Signature Suites, most with private plunge pools and outdoor showers, all threaded through tropical gardens by the same architect who dreamed up the original 1980s property. Come for the two beaches, stay for the fact that the staff will greet you by name from day two.

The Experience

You arrive by winding coastal road (or, more likely, by hotel golf cart from the airport) and immediately clock that this is not the Gustavia scene. Grand Cul-de-Sac's shallow, turquoise lagoon is protected by a reef, so the water in front of the resort is glassy enough for beginner kite-surfers and paddle-boarders, while a short walk over the point drops you onto wilder Marechal Beach facing Marigot Bay. Days are quietly luxurious: espresso and pastries on your terrace, a beach chair at the Beach House with unlimited chilled towels and rose, a long lunch of grilled langoustine at Beach House, a Sense Spa hydrotherapy circuit, then sunset at Lounge overlooking the lagoon before dinner at the flagship restaurant. It's the kind of place where the pool boy remembers your kids' names and the concierge quietly upgrades your dinner reservation at Bonito the night you forgot to book.

What to Try

Book an Ocean View Pool Suite or one of the standalone Signature Suites for the private plunge pool and outdoor shower - the newly rebuilt units are noticeably more spacious than the classic garden rooms. Do at least one dinner at the flagship gastronomic restaurant (three ambiances, from toes-in-sand to fine dining) and one long, boozy lunch at Beach House. Book Sense, A Rosewood Spa for a Caribbean-inspired ritual using local ingredients, and reserve the couples' suite with hydrotherapy access. Take advantage of the complimentary non-motorized watersports - kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear - the lagoon in front of the property has surprisingly good reef life. Play a set on the (rare-for-St-Barth) tennis court before it gets hot, and let the concierge arrange a private boat day to Colombier or Ile Fourchue.

Insider Tip

Room category matters more here than at almost any other St Barth hotel: the property spans a big peninsula, so a Garden View room can be a solid uphill walk from the beach and dining. If you don't want to rely on the golf-cart shuttle, insist on something in the 200 or 300 block (closer to the lagoon) or splurge on a Signature Suite. And if you're coming for kite-surfing season (December to April), request a room on the Grand Cul-de-Sac side - you'll be able to watch the kites go up from your terrace and walk straight onto the lagoon.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Grand Cul-de-Sac, on the northeast coast about 15 minutes by car from Gustavia and 10 minutes from St Jean airport (SBH). Season: open year-round; peak is mid-December through mid-April (holiday rates require 7-14 night minimums), sweet spot is early November or late April/May for good weather and softer pricing. Getting there: fly into SBH via St Maarten (SXM) - the hotel arranges transfers and can pre-book the STOL flight. Cars: a rental (small 4x4 or Mini Moke) is smart if you want to explore beaches and Gustavia at your own pace; otherwise the hotel shuttles into town. Dress: resort-casual by day, smart-casual at dinner - no need for a jacket. Kids: welcome, with a dedicated kids' program, but the vibe is grown-up.

  • Nikki Beach St Barth — The obvious daytime move for a rose-fueled long lunch and DJ set on the sand at Baie de St Jean, 10 minutes away.
  • Shellona Beach — Greek-Mediterranean beach club on Shell Beach in Gustavia - book a bed for the afternoon and stay for the sunset.
  • Bonito St Barth — Hillside Latin American restaurant with a knockout view over Gustavia harbor - the concierge can usually get you in on short notice.
  • Colombier Beach — Only reachable by boat or a 20-minute hike; the hotel can charter a boat for a half-day of snorkeling and a picnic on the sand.
  • Le Toiny — If you want to hotel-hop for lunch, book a table at Le Toiny's beach club on the wild south coast - it's the closest thing to Le Guanahani's cousin on the island.
