Why Go
Locals will tell you Flamands is the beach you drive to when you want the ocean to feel bigger. It's the longest stretch of sand on the island, framed by rocky headlands and low dunes, and it faces open Atlantic swell — so on a calm morning it's a mirror, and by afternoon it can throw up shoulder-high sets that draw bodysurfers out of the villas above. Come here for the space, the shade of the sea-grape trees, and the sunset light that turns the whole bay copper.
The Experience
Flamands sits at the western end of the island, a winding ten-minute drive from Gustavia past the salt pond of Corossol. There are no beach clubs claiming loungers with velvet rope, no DJs, no dress code — just soft, deep sand that squeaks underfoot and water that shifts from turquoise close in to a deep royal blue where the reef drops off. Two discreet hotels bookend the beach (Cheval Blanc to the east, Isle de France's old footprint), but the middle is public and blissfully undeveloped. Bring a towel and a book, or walk the full arc barefoot; at the far western tip a footpath climbs the cliff toward Colombier beach, one of the prettiest 25-minute hikes in the Caribbean.
What to Try
Time your visit for the golden hour before sunset when the wind drops and the light goes cinematic — this is the west-facing beach on the island, so it's the only one where you can watch the sun sink straight into the sea. If the surf is up, borrow a bodyboard and ride the shorebreak; if it's flat, snorkel the rocky point on the eastern end where parrotfish and the occasional turtle graze the reef ledge. Pack lunch from a Gustavia traiteur — there are no vendors on the sand — and set up under one of the sea-grape trees near the western end where the natural shade is best.
Insider Tip
Park at the very end of the road (past the Cheval Blanc entrance) rather than at the eastern lot — the sand there is wider, the crowd thinner, and you're steps from the trailhead over to Colombier. Also: check the swell before you commit to a swim day. When a north swell is running (typically December–February) Flamands turns into a serious shorebreak that can pound you into the sand; on those days locals decamp to the calm waters of Grand Cul-de-Sac on the other side of the island.
The Practical Stuff
Free public access with a small gravel parking area at each end of the beach; arrive before 11am in high season to secure a spot. No lifeguard, no rentals, no restrooms on the beach itself — the closest facilities are at the hotels (guests only) or back in Gustavia. Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, and an umbrella if you're staying past noon; the beach faces west with almost no natural shade in the middle. The road in is narrow and steep in places — a small car is easier than an SUV.
