Why Go

Most visitors think of Hertz as an airport-terminal chore, but on St Barth it's the opposite: the marquee counter is tucked into Hotel Le Toiny, the cliff-hanging retreat above Anse Toiny on the island's untamed southeastern edge. That means you can step off a taxi from Rémy de Haenen Airport, sign the paperwork with a rum punch in hand, and be winding down to Grand Cul-de-Sac in under twenty minutes — no rental-lot fluorescents required.

The Experience

The Le Toiny desk is the antithesis of a highway rental branch. Staff know the switchbacks by heart and will match you to the right vehicle for where you're actually staying: a Mini Moke or open-top Suzuki if you're villa-hopping around Saline and Gouverneur, a Jimny or small 4x4 for the vertiginous climbs above Colombier and Toiny itself, or a tidier Mini Cooper / compact if you're mostly darting between Gustavia dinners and Saint-Jean shopping. Airport and Gustavia harbour pickups are also on offer through the same operator if Le Toiny is out of the way, but collecting on-site is the move if you're staying anywhere on the south or east coast ΓÇö the drive back down the Route de Toiny at golden hour, goats on the shoulders and the Atlantic cracking against the rocks, is a proper St Barth welcome.

What to Try

Book a Mini Moke or open-sided Suzuki Jimny rather than a sedan ΓÇö the island's steep, single-lane roads reward small footprints and short wheelbases, and half the fun is driving with the roof off. If you're travelling as a couple with light luggage, a Fiat Panda 4x4 or Mini Cooper is the sweet spot: nimble on the hairpins, easy to slot into Gustavia's tiny parking bays, and cheaper on fuel than a full Jeep. Add the extra insurance ΓÇö scrapes on wing mirrors are almost a rite of passage here.

Insider Tip

There are only two petrol stations on the entire island (Lorient and near the airport in Saint-Jean) and both close on Sundays. The airport station has a 24-hour automatic pump, but it only accepts chip-and-PIN cards issued in the EU ΓÇö Americans with US credit cards routinely get caught out. Fill up on Saturday, or budget an extra half-day on a Monday return. Also: the 45 km/h island speed limit is enforced, and there's zero tolerance for phone use behind the wheel, including at red lights in Gustavia.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Hertz counter inside Hotel Le Toiny, Anse de Toiny, 97133 Saint-Barthélemy (roughly 15 minutes by taxi from Rémy de Haenen Airport / SBH). Any valid national driver's licence is accepted for stays under 90 days; minimum rental age is typically 21 with a surcharge under 25. Reserve well ahead in high season (mid-December through early January, and around the Bucket / Voiles regattas in March–April) — the island's fleet is small and sells out weeks in advance. Drive on the right, yield to traffic entering from the right at unmarked junctions, and note that most rental contracts exclude damage from off-road tracks and the unpaved descent to Colombier beach.
