Le Village St Barth: A Hillside Hideaway Above Saint-Jean Bay
Family-run, four-star charm perched above the island's prettiest crescent of sand.
Why Go
Tucked into the Colline de Saint-Jean since 1969, Le Village is that rare St Barth address where the Vanderbilts and Greta Garbo once checked in and second-generation owners still greet you by name — an antidote to the island's flashier resorts.
The Experience
André Charneau carved this hillside compound out of local red and grey rock back when the road up was still a footpath, and his children Catherine and Bertrand run it with the same homespun elegance today. Twenty-five air-conditioned rooms, cottages, suites and villas step down the slope in a mosaic of stonework and greenery, most opening onto private terraces that frame the turquoise arc of Saint-Jean Bay below. A palm-fringed infinity pool, a second quieter pool, a jacuzzi, a two-story Ipe-wood Wellness Cottage and a fitness room round out the grounds, while breakfast is served communally — a rarity on St Barth — which nudges guests into easy conversation over fresh pastries and fruit. It's less resort, more residence: think mahogany-trimmed Tradition Cottages, kitchen-equipped suites for long stays, and a staff-to-guest ratio that means the concierge already knows you want the sunset table at Nikki Beach.
What to Try
Book a Superior Cottage or Luxury Suite with a full kitchen and dining patio — the sunset views over Saint-Jean and the airport landing strip are the island's best free show. Start mornings with a stretch at the Wellness Cottage, then walk five minutes downhill to Saint-Jean Beach for a swim before the beach clubs fill up. Ask the front desk to arrange a treatment with 6e Sens Massage, and time at least one dinner at Abyss or a beach lunch at Nikki Beach so you can walk home barefoot along the sand-and-shell path.
Insider Tip
Request one of the renovated hillside cottages on the upper terraces (numbers 20-something and above) — they're set back from the road, catch the trade winds, and give you an unobstructed sightline over the bay to Île Chevreau. If you're staying a week or more, ask Catherine directly about the standalone villas managed through Le Village Property; they include daily housekeeping but with far more privacy than the main hotel rooms.
The Practical Stuff
Colline de St. Jean, 97133 Saint-Barthélemy. A five-minute walk downhill to Saint-Jean Beach and a two-minute drive to Rémy de Haenen Airport (light aircraft noise ends by sunset). Rental car strongly recommended — the hillside driveway is steep and taxis are scarce. Continental breakfast is included; there's no on-site restaurant, but the concierge books tables across the island. Open year-round with a typical closure window in September; peak season runs mid-December through April.
