Why Go
Perched above the entrance of Gustavia's yacht-filled port, this whitewashed 1961 lighthouse sits atop the ruins of an 18th-century Swedish fort. It's a five-minute uphill scramble that rewards you with a 360° panorama of red rooftops, superyachts, and the Caribbean spilling out toward Anguilla — and, at dusk, one of the most-photographed sunsets on the island.
The Experience
You don't really 'do' the Gustavia Lighthouse — you drift up to it. From the harbor, a short set of stone steps snakes up through scrubby tropical brush and the crumbling remnants of Fort Gustav, built by the Swedes in 1787 to guard the port. Within a few minutes you're standing beside the compact, cream-colored tower, wind in your hair, looking straight down onto the masts of the mega-yachts moored below. The lighthouse itself isn't open to the public, but nobody comes for the interior — it's all about the vantage point. Locals bring takeaway coffee at sunrise; visitors show up with a bottle of rosé at golden hour. When regattas like the St Barths Bucket are on, this is the island's unofficial grandstand.
What to Try
Time your visit for the last hour before sunset — the light turns the terracotta rooftops of Gustavia molten and the anchored yachts throw long shadows across the bay. Walk a slow lap around the base of the tower to catch each angle: harbor to the east, Shell Beach and the open Caribbean to the west, and the hills of Corossol curling to the north. Bring a real camera if you have one; the panorama is wider than a phone screen can honestly capture.
Insider Tip
Skip the front-of-harbor stone steps and instead park up near Fort Gustav, then walk the short flat path in from behind — it's a fraction of the effort and delivers you straight to the same view. Come 45 minutes before sunset, not at sunset itself: you'll get parking, a spot on the wall, and the whole color show as it builds. The wind up here is genuinely strong, so anything loose (hats, napkins, hair ties) will end up in the harbor.

The climb from the harbor takes 5–10 minutes on uneven stone steps; the Fort Gustav approach is nearly flat and takes 2 minutes. Wear closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals (not heels), bring water and sunscreen, and note there's zero shade at the top. Limited street parking near the fort; in high season, walk up from town. No restrooms or facilities on-site.
