The Experience
Don't expect a tourist stop ΓÇö this is a working inspection bay handling the biennial contr├┤le technique that every French-registered vehicle four years and older needs to stay road-legal. Cars, small utility vans, and the island's ubiquitous Minis, Suzuki Jimnys, and open-top Mokes all rotate through: brakes, suspension, lights, emissions, chassis, and steering are checked to the same standard as any station in metropolitan France. The visit itself usually runs 30ΓÇô45 minutes, and you leave with either a green sticker good for two years or a punch-list (contre-visite) to fix and re-present within two months.
What to Try
Phone ahead rather than dropping in ΓÇö the schedule tightens around the pre-season rush when rental fleets cycle their vehicles through in bulk. Bring your carte grise (vehicle registration) and photo ID; if the car is a long-term rental, bring the agency's paperwork authorizing the inspection in your name.

St. Barth's salt-laden coastal air is brutal on undercarriages, and the two most common reasons for a contre-visite here are corroded brake lines and rusted exhaust mounts ΓÇö not the alignment or emissions issues that trip cars up back in mainland France. If your vehicle is more than six or seven years old, have your regular mechanic look at the underbody a week before your appointment so you're not paying for two inspections and two mornings out of your week.
