Insider Tip

Rent the smallest car you can find (a Mini Moke or a Suzuki Jimny) rather than an SUV. St. Barth's roads are narrow, steep and hairpinned, parking spots are pocket-sized, and locals judge you gently by how you handle the climb out of Gustavia. Fill up at the Saint-Jean station before Sunday — it's the only pump on the island open on weekends, and it closes early.

Address: 97133, Saint Barthélemy (central island, near Gustavia). Fly in via a small turboprop from Sint Maarten (SXM) — the 10-minute hop over the ridge is the island's most famous arrival. High season runs mid-December to mid-April with a firm holiday minimum stay; May, June and November offer the same weather for a fraction of the rate. Euros are the local currency but USD is accepted almost everywhere. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a light layer for breezy evenings, and cash for the smaller beach shacks.
