Why Go
While the rest of St Barth polishes its yachts and sips rosé in Saint-Jean, Anse de Grand Fond stays gloriously untamed. This is the island's rugged Atlantic flank — a long ribbon of smooth pebbles pounded by rolling swells, hemmed in by green hills and empty of sunbeds, DJs, and dress codes. Come for the drama, stay for the natural infinity pools carved into the rocks just up the coast.
The Experience
Getting here already tells you everything: the road twists down through Grand Fond's scattered stone cottages — one of the last pockets of old-Norman, fisherman St Barth — and dead-ends at a stretch of coast that feels closer to Brittany than the Caribbean. The 'beach' is really a wide pebble bank, constantly rearranged by the Atlantic, with waves that thump loud enough to drown out conversation. There's no shade, no beach bar, no lifeguard, and often nobody else. What you get instead is space, sky, wind, and the kind of horizon-line quiet that reminds you the island is only 8 square miles of volcanic rock in a very big ocean.
What to Try
Walk the pebbles south toward the headland and follow the coastal path (roughly 15–20 minutes, sturdy shoes essential) to the Piscines Naturelles de Grand Fond — natural rock pools that fill with foaming Atlantic water in what locals cheerfully call 'the washing machine.' On calm days you can soak; on big-swell days you stand back and watch the spray. Photographers should time golden hour, when the low sun turns the pebbles amber and the sea silver. Bring a picnic — there's nowhere to buy so much as a bottle of water once you leave the paved road.

Never turn your back on the ocean here. The swells are deceptively powerful and the 'natural pools' have swept unwary visitors out to sea in rough conditions — check the forecast, avoid the site on windward swell days, and stay well above the splash line. Locals go on calm mornings before the trades pick up around midday.
The Practical Stuff
Location: east coast of St Barth, at the end of the Route de Grand Fond via Lorient. Access: rental car or scooter only — no bus service, and taxis rarely wait. Free roadside parking at the end of the road. No facilities: bring water, sun protection, reef-safe sunscreen, sturdy shoes for the pool hike, and take all trash with you. Swimming at the beach itself is not advised due to rocks, currents, and shore break. Best visited in the dry season (December–May) and in the morning before the wind picks up.
