The Experience
Sunset sits at the tail end of runway 10, so close that the fence between you and landing traffic is really just a suggestion. The vibe is unfiltered Caribbean beach-bar chaos: reggae and classic rock on the speakers, sand blowing through the open-air deck, servers ducking behind the bar the instant a heavy jet spools up for departure. The crowd is a mash-up of aviation geeks with long lenses, cruise-ship day-trippers ticking off a bucket-list photo, and Simpson Bay regulars nursing painkillers while the sun drops behind Saba on the horizon. Grab a high-top facing the water and the runway is on your left, the turquoise Caribbean on your right, and the flight board directly overhead — you'll know exactly when the next Air France A340 or Delta 757 is due. The Jet Blast shot is the signature — a sweet, punchy layered pour named after the wall of hot air that flattens tourists clinging to the runway fence during departures. Follow it with a frozen painkiller or a Carib beer straight from the ice bin. On the food side, the pizzas are named after airlines (the KLM and Delta are crowd favorites) and the burgers, ribs, and conch fritters are honest beach-bar fare built to soak up rum. If you're staying for sunset, order the mahi-mahi sandwich and a bushwacker and settle in.

Check the day's arrival board the moment you sit down and time your visit around the widebodies — KLM's daily Amsterdam flight (usually early afternoon) and the transatlantic Air France are the only true jumbos that still land here, and they're what you came for. Grab a stool at the beach-facing rail 20 minutes before touchdown. When the ground crew waves the red flag for a departure, do NOT stand behind the fence for the jet blast unless you're ready to lose your hat, your sunglasses, and possibly your dignity into the surf — it has knocked people flat and sandblasted more than one GoPro into the sea.

Right on Maho Beach at 2 Beacon Hill Road, a two-minute walk from the Sonesta resorts and about 10 minutes by car or bus from Philipsburg or the Simpson Bay marina strip. Open daily from late morning until after sunset; kitchen runs all day. Cash (USD) and major cards accepted, tipping in USD is standard. Expect drinks in the $8–14 range and mains $15–25 — you're paying for the runway view, not the menu. No reservations, so arrive by 11am on cruise days to claim a beach-facing table. Bring reef-safe sunblock, a hat with a chin strap, and something to shield your camera from blowing sand.
