Why Go
Quartier d'Orléans — the French Quarter to everyone who lives here — is the oldest continuously settled part of the French side and the least touristed. The Experience
The village is a grid of narrow streets that goes about its business regardless of the season — a school run, a supermarket, men fixing a car in the shade. It feels different from the rest of the French side because it is not arranged around visitors at all. On the coast, Le Galion is a wide, shallow bay protected by a reef, so the water is warm, waist-deep a long way out and almost flat, which is why families and kitesurf schools both end up there for opposite reasons. Nearby, String Beach and Waï Plage are smaller and quieter. Inland the road climbs toward the lookout and the old estate, and the hills here are green and largely empty. Hurricane Irma hit this area hard and the recovery has been slower than on the coast, which is visible as you drive through and worth registering rather than looking past.

Go to Amuseum Naturalis at The Old House, which is a small, free, volunteer-run museum of the island's natural and human history in a restored plantation house — it is the single best hour of context available anywhere on St. Martin, and almost no visitor finds it. Then go to Le Galion for the water: Wind Adventures and the Saint Martin Surf Club teach kitesurfing and windsurfing in the flat shallows, and Bikini Watersports and Fly Addiction Parasail cover the rest. Eat at Chez Leandra for local cooking, L'Atelier Restaurant or Maison Mère for the sit-down version, and Waï Plage for feet in the sand. SuKi supermarket and the Petit Casino are the practical shops. The Rotary Lookout Point on the road above gives the view over the whole eastern coast. If you are staying at Orient Bay, the useful habit is to come inland for a morning rather than treating this as somewhere you pass through on the way to the beach.

Then stop at the Amuseum on the way back, because it is free, it is short, and it will change how you read the rest of your week.
