Why Go
You've cleared security at Princess Juliana, you have an hour to kill, and you forgot to grab a bottle of Guavaberry for your neighbor. This is where you fix that. Princess Promenade is the post-security strip of duty-free shops operated by ILTT, the company that has been importing spirits to St. Maarten since 1960, so the liquor wall here is the deepest you'll see on the island.
The Experience
The vibe is straightforward airport-retail: bright lighting, glass shelves, staff who are used to travelers in a hurry. You'll find the spirits section is the real draw — rums, tequilas, single malts, and Caribbean liqueurs lined up by category with duty-free pricing clearly marked. Beyond booze, the shops carry tobacco, wines, sunglasses, travel accessories, and the usual airport gift-shop overflow. It's busy around peak departure waves (late morning and late afternoon), quieter in between.
What to Try
Lean into what ILTT actually specializes in: local and Caribbean spirits you can't easily get back home. Guavaberry liqueur, local-aged rums, and Cuban-style cigars are the categories worth your time over the same global vodka brands you'd find in any airport.
Insider Tip
Don't do your duty-free shopping in the Arrival hall when you land — prices and selection are better after security in Departures, and you avoid lugging glass bottles around the island for a week. If you're connecting through a U.S. airport, ask the cashier to seal the bottles in a STEB bag with the receipt visible, or TSA will confiscate them at your next checkpoint.
The Practical Stuff
The shops run 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, which covers essentially every commercial departure out of SXM. You'll only access this location after passing through security with a boarding pass, so build in 20–30 minutes before boarding if you actually want to browse rather than grab-and-go. Major cards and USD are standard; you do not need guilders.
