Madame Estate is a residential and commercial district on the road east out of Philipsburg, and it is where St. Maarten buys things in quantity. The warehouse supermarket, the big Carrefour, the fast food and the electronics are all here, which makes it the least glamorous entry in any guide to this island and one of the most useful. If you are in a villa for a week, this is the drive you make on day one. If you are not, it is the corner you pass through on the way to the French side without noticing.
The Experience
The area climbs away from the Philipsburg side of the salt pond into ordinary streets — houses, workshops, schools, a couple of churches — with the retail concentrated along the main road. There is no seafront and no view; it is a working part of the island where a large share of the people who staff the restaurants and hotels actually live. Traffic through here is heavy at the start and end of the working day, and the junctions on the main road are the slow points. What it does have, uniquely on this half of the island, is scale: everything else is small shops at resort prices, and here the shelves are deep and the trolleys are big. The attractions in the hills behind, on the old Rockland estate, are close enough to fold into the same trip. Including a district like this in a guide at all is a deliberate choice: a week in a villa is shaped as much by where you buy food as by which beach you pick, and nobody tells you that in advance.

Shop first. Cost-U-Less is the warehouse store where villa guests and locals stock up, Carrefour Market SXM is the full-size supermarket, and Tech Hub, SXM Vision Center and Office 1 Superstores cover the practical things you forgot to pack. Eat where the neighbourhood eats: Cafe Rembrandt, Di Jungle Bar & Restaurant and Eve's Sporting Lounge are the local rooms, with the familiar chains alongside if that is the day you are having. In the hills nearby, Rainforest Adventure runs the zipline and the hillside rides, Parrot Ville Bird Park sits on the same estate, and Run & Duck Paintball is the other way to spend an afternoon out of the sun. Celeb Tours SXM and Seagrape-style guided trips start from this side of the island. Art House St. Maarten and Arts from the Heart are the small local galleries.

Do your week's shop here on the first afternoon, not in Simpson Bay on the third day. The price difference between the warehouse store and the small supermarkets near the beaches is large enough to notice across a week of breakfasts, lunches and drinks, and this is a ten-minute drive from Philipsburg with easy free parking. Go before four, because the main road through here backs up badly at the end of the working day.
