Why Go
The Simpson Bay side of the Dutch coast is basically built for jet skis - a calm inner lagoon on one side, wide-open Caribbean chop on the other, and low-flying jumbos overhead if you point west toward Maho. This roadside rental shop on Welfare Road puts you between the two, five minutes on foot from the yacht-club bridge and about a kilometer's ride from the airport approach.
The Experience
You show up in flip-flops, sign the waiver, get the safety brief and a quick throttle demo on the water, then you're off. Most riders spend the first ten minutes getting comfortable inside the protected part of Simpson Bay before opening it up along the coastline. The typical loop hugs the Pelican and Cupecoy cliffs, cuts across to Maho for the plane-watching money shot, and swings back past the megayachts moored outside the lagoon bridge. Guides ride alongside if you book a tour; solo hourly rentals run under a shore attendant's eye so you can carve your own line as long as you stay inside the buoy zone.
What to Try
The 60-minute rental is the sweet spot - long enough to reach Maho, buzz the reef line, and still have throttle time to play in the wake. Doubles are cheaper per person and let a nervous partner ride pillion. If a cruise ship is in Philipsburg that day, ask about the extended coastal run east toward Great Bay for a very different (and much emptier) stretch of shoreline. First-timers should stick to the standard Simpson Bay to Maho loop with a guide.
Insider Tip
Book the earliest morning slot you can - the wind picks up after 11am, the lagoon chops out by lunchtime, and the sun is behind you for the ride west toward Maho so you actually see the planes coming in instead of squinting into glare. Wear a rashguard or a real t-shirt over sunscreen; the salt spray at 40mph will strip SPF off your shoulders in about fifteen minutes.
The Practical Stuff
Cash (USD) and card both fine, but a cash tip for the guide is standard. Bring a dry bag or leave valuables locked at the shop - GoPro chest mounts are the only camera you'll actually use out there. Minimum age to drive is usually 18 with ID; kids can ride double with a parent. Deposit or credit-card hold is standard against damage. Closed-toe water shoes aren't required but help on the concrete ramp. Skip it if the small-craft advisory is up - the outer coast gets ugly fast on a north swell.
