Cole Bay, St. Maarten: Where the Island Does Its Shopping
The junction everyone drives through, with better food and cheaper prices than the beaches.
Why Go
Cole Bay is the working middle of the Dutch side — the stretch between Simpson Bay and Philipsburg where the island buys its groceries, services its boats and gets its cars fixed. Almost every visitor passes through it and almost none of them stop, which is a small mistake, because the restaurants here are good and priced for people who live on the island rather than people renting a beach chair. There is no beach and there is no resort. What there is, is the lagoon, the marine trades that work it, and the best value eating within ten minutes of anywhere.
The Experience
The main road runs through the middle and carries the entire island's traffic between the airport end and the capital, which means the junction backs up badly at rush hour and on cruise mornings. Either side of it is a mix of retail parks, warehouses, marine businesses and residential streets climbing the hill. The lagoon side is where the character is: Simpson Bay Lagoon is one of the largest in the Caribbean and Cole Bay sits on its southern shore, with chandlers, riggers and boatyards along the water and yachts on the hard through hurricane season. Up the hill, the road over Cole Bay Hill gives you the view across the whole lagoon toward Marigot and the French side, and it is the best free view on the island. It is a place people live rather than visit, and it does not have an evening scene beyond the restaurants themselves.
What to Try
Eat here at least once. Replay Restaurant & Sports Bar and Lee's Roadside Grill & Bar are the informal fixtures, Izi Ristorante Italiano and Pizza Italy cover the Italian end, La Sucriere and Reveil Matin SXM handle the French-side breakfast and lunch tradition on the Dutch side of the border, and Island Food Market and Sélect wine cellar are where you stock a villa properly. SXM Beer is the island's own brewery and worth a visit on its own terms. On the water, Ocean Explorers Dive Center is one of the longest-running dive operations here, and Coconut Reef Fishing & Snorkeling Tours, Rhino Mini-Speed Boat Snorkeling Tours SXM, Powerboat Adventures and St Maarten Boat Charters all work out of this side of the lagoon. Drive over Cole Bay Hill rather than around it at least once, and stop at the top. The view over Simpson Bay Lagoon toward Marigot and the French hills is the one that explains the island's geography in a single look, and it costs nothing. On timing: avoid the main road through Cole Bay between about seven and nine in the morning and again in the late afternoon, and avoid it entirely on a heavy cruise morning, when this junction is where the whole island jams.
The Practical Stuff
Cole Bay is about ten minutes from Princess Juliana airport and fifteen to twenty from Philipsburg, sitting on the main road between them, which is both its convenience and its problem. You need a car — there is no walkable centre, the businesses are strung along the road and up the hill, and nothing here is a stroll. Parking is easy and free almost everywhere, which is not true in Philipsburg or Simpson Bay. The border with the French side is a few minutes north at the lagoon and is open with no formalities. Shops keep ordinary business hours and the retail parks stay open later than the tourist areas; Sundays are quiet. Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, and the lagoon here is where a large share of the region's yachts come to sit it out, which tells you how sheltered it is.

No. Cole Bay is a working district on the lagoon, not the sea. Simpson Bay, Maho and Mullet Bay beaches are five to fifteen minutes west, and Great Bay in Philipsburg is fifteen to twenty minutes east.
Should you stay in Cole Bay?
Only if you want value and a car and do not mind driving to the water. It is central, cheap and quiet at night, but it has no beach, no walkable centre and no evening scene beyond its restaurants.
