Why Go
Beacon Hill is the low headland immediately west of Princess Juliana's runway, between Maho and Mullet Bay. It is where the aircraft cross the coast, which makes it the quieter place to watch them from, and it carries a strip of restaurants, small shops and hotels along the road behind. Nobody comes to St. Maarten for Beacon Hill specifically. Plenty of people stay here, because it is a short walk from Maho's noise and a short drive from the island's best beach.
The Experience
The road runs behind the runway with the sea on one side, and the whole area sits within a few hundred metres of both the airport fence and the Maho strip. It is built up without being dense — hotels, apartment blocks, a run of eating places — and there is a small beach and rocky shore below. The planes are the defining feature: closer here than almost anywhere except Maho itself, but without the crowd standing on the sand, so if it is the aircraft you came for and not the party, this is the better vantage. Mullet Pond and the wetland behind hold birds, which is an oddly quiet thing to find a few hundred metres from a runway. In the evening most people walk the few minutes to Maho. That walkability is the practical case for the area: you get the strip's restaurants, bars and casinos on foot, and you sleep a few hundred metres back from the middle of them, which is a materially different night's sleep for a fairly small difference in address.

Eat along the strip: Salt Restaurant + Bar is the sit-down one, The Burger Bar SXM and Sandbar SXM cover the informal end, Tortuga Maho is the reliable middle, and Mr. Papaya's does breakfast through to dinner with crepes in between. The Ice Cream Bar SXM handles the afternoon and the Driftwood Boat Bar the drink. Maho Market is the practical shop. If you are here for a short stay or an overnight between flights, this corner is hard to beat on convenience alone: you can land, drop bags, eat something decent, watch an afternoon of arrivals and be back at the terminal inside two minutes the following morning.

Watch the aircraft from here rather than from Maho Beach. You are under much the same approach, the noise and the spectacle are nearly identical, and you are not standing in a crowd of several hundred people at the end of a runway. Then go to Mullet Bay to swim: it is five minutes west, it is a far better beach than anything at this end, and the sea-grape shade is free.
The Practical Stuff
Beacon Hill is about two minutes from Princess Juliana airport, a few minutes' walk from Maho and five from Mullet Bay. Almost everything here is walkable within the area, which is unusual on this island; a car is still useful for Philipsburg, twenty-five minutes east, and the French side twenty to thirty minutes north. Parking is available along the road and at the hotels. Aircraft noise is constant during daylight and stops overnight, and it is genuinely loud — this is not somewhere to book if quiet matters. Shops and restaurants keep long hours in season and thin out considerably in the autumn. Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, and this corner took heavy damage in 2017.
